Hi all,
i have an acer aspire 5316 with 1 GB RAM.
(2x)Samsung
type: DDR2-SDRAM PC-2-5300 (333MHz) - (DDR2-666)
format: S0-DIMM (67,6 x 3)
512MB (2 ranks,4 banks)
I want to move at least to 2 GB of RAM.
What type of memory should i buy? I have intel GM965 chipset
Thanks

Crucial has a tool to scan and advice you:
SDRAM, DDR2 and DDR RAM memory upgrades from Crucial.com -
To clarify you will need 2x 1GB PC2-5300 (otherwise known as 667MHz) 200pin SO-DIMM's for 2GB.
Your GM965 chipset based laptop will support up to 8GB of PC2-4200 or PC2-5300 DDR2 memory -
If 8GB is too expensive, might be better if you invest in 4GB instead... though honestly, I got 2x4GB DDR2 800Mhz (so-dimm) from E-bay for about $100.
Not exactly cheap, but cheaper than what you can get from regular stores.
To that end, I would strongly advise ebay for purchase (from a reputable seller of course). -
* The going rate for a 2GB DDR2 SODIMM module is about $15-$20 each used.
* The going rate for a 1GB DDR2 SODIMM modoule is about $8-$10 each used.
For your purposes, getting either 1x 2GB DDR2 SODIMM mobile ($15 - $20) or 2x 2GB DDR2 SODIMM module ($30 - $40) would be fine. Any RAM above 4GB would be a waste of money.
The big problem with DDR2 memory right now is that it is old enough to stop being manufactured, but not so old that it is obsolete. That means that it is very expensive. By comparison, you can get a new set of 2x4GB DDR3 SODIMMs for $25 (DDR3 will not work with your laptop, so don't bother trying to buy that. You are stuck with DDR2).
The reason I mention this is because you should not be spending more than $30 - $40 on this "upgrade." Your laptop is going to be obsolete pretty soon, and spending $100 on a 2x4GB DDR2 SODIMM upgrade would be a waste of money at this point. You are better off buying a new laptop, if you really need 8GB of RAM. -
I just upgraded my old computer from 2 gb DDR2 800 Mhz to 4 gb and it made a very noticeable improvement. If you run a lot of programs or a few bigger ones at the same time then I would strongly recommend going up to 4 gb as 2 just doesn't cut it anymore.
