You could probably rip the ram and upgrade to 4GB for a reasonable cost. However, the T3400 processor is a Pentium Dual-Core, a budget processor, with a 667MHz-frontside bus, and your system uses Intel's GL40 chipset. If I recall correctly, the GL40 chipset is somewhat limited in terms of the processors it supports, and you may find upgrading difficult.

If the system is limited to a 667 frontside bus, you're kind of screwed. Any significant upgrade would be on a 45nm process (your processor is 65nm) with an 800MHz or 1066MHz frontside bus, and I doubt your system will support those.

It is probably better to sell this laptop and buy one with what you need, than to sink in money you won't get back on upgrades.

    Specs for your laptop

What price range can you afford?

You can get a ThinkPad T400 or T500 with discrete ATI Radeon 3470HD graphics (your HP has Intel graphics, poor for games) and most of the toys for around $900 plus tax through the CPP program, possibly less if you don't mind subtracting certain features, such as a fingerprint reader, Bluetooth, going with a semi-basic operating system (e.g., Vista Home Premium) and sticking with the base WiFi card.

Your HP/Compaq's Intel graphics is the Achilles heel when it comes to gaming; even with its basic processor, a good graphics card would have helped it.

P.S. If gaming is your number one priority, a desktop might be a better choice, unless you absolutely have to have portability. Easier to get a good graphics card and processor for cheap, and far easier to upgrade as time goes by.
