Hi, there is currently a sale on 4gb ddr2 667 ram ($40) and I was wondering if it is worth it to upgrade from the 2gb ddr2 800 ram that I have. I know the 667 is a step down in speed but i was thinking that with 4gb it wouldn't matter. This notebook will be used for some gaming. Here's some info on my notebook:

    core 2 duo 2.4ghz
    2gb ddr2-800 ram
    512mb 9600m gt
    vista home OS

Should I not bother upgrading and wait to get ddr2 800 ram, or just not bother upgrading at all because 2gb is enough? Thanks in advance for the help.

Which notebook (and CPU?). If it has the Santa Rosa chipset, the DDR2-800 ram will downclock to 667MHz.

I guess you already know that you would need a 64 bit OS to make full use of the 4GB RAM.

You can check out G.Skill's DDR2-667 CL=4 Ram for a slight gain in performance. (But it'll be twice the amount of your 'deal')

it's a HP dv5t and the CPU is a Core 2 Duo P8600. I looked up the memory recommendations through crucial.com and it says it can downclock to 667. Yea, I read that only the 64bit OS will make full use of 4gb ram. The reason I didn't get 64bit was because I read there were software compatibility issues and hard to find drivers. I took a look at G.Skill memory and it has a lot of good reviews. It also has heat spreaders, which is nice.

Oh, P8600 - Montevina chipset. It'll support DDR2-800. This low latency OCZ ram is DDR2-800 CL=5, around $60 - I believe its a good deal, but it doesn't mention anything about Lifetime Warranty.

thanks, I think it is better to just pay $20 more and not get slower ram. Now I'm starting to think I should have gotten vista 64 to make full use of the 4gb..

Yes if Montevina don't get the slower RAM.

You can borrow a vista home 64 bit disc, try installing it with the same key, or do something like activate later to bypass the installer serial-key entry (if possible), and call up MS regarding the activation.

Hi, I'm another user of HP Dv5t with T9400cpu, and 9600m Gt, I'm wondering if my notebook support DDR3 for future upgrade, and how much ram does my notebook support? Thx.

The DDR3 socket is physically different from the DDR2 socket (204 vs 200 pins).

It'll need a different motherboard, and HP doesn't offer a motherboard for the DV5t with DDR3 sockets, so your notebook will not be able to support DDR3 memory.
