Hi
on this website it says that this RAM will be compatable with my Dell Inspiron 6400
http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=BBA6AC92A5CA7304
can anyone confirm this?
also how do you actualy go about installing this extra RAM?
-
You can download a service manual from Dell for your model, it will show you how to replace RAM. I downloaded the manual for the one I am getting, and it has instructions with photos.
-
The RAM is compatible. To upgrade, just get the manual and unscrew and remove the correct hatch at the bottom.
-
would i then have to install some driver for it or something?
-
No, you don't need to install any drivers. The RAM should be recognized automatically.
-
How much ram do you have right now and in what configuration? Because of you want 2 GB, that will not allow you to get it. The dell has 2 memory slots, and that will take up both.
-
its only got 512 at the mo, and i want to put in a 1gig.
iv already got the manual, and had a quick look through and it looks pretty easy to install.
thanks guys -
It's smarter to get one stick of 1 Gb ram, so you can easier upgrade to 2 gb if you would want to in the future. Meanwhile you would get 1,25-1,5 gb of ram (depending on wether you've got 1 stick of 512 or 2 sticks of 256). Dual Channel does not give that big of a improvement, and newer intel and amd laptops can run asynchronus (the ram-sticks are different sizes) dual channel.

i was going to put in a 1 gig, to take it to 1.5gig.
so are you saying its better to take out the 512 and replace it with the 1gig? -
Nope. What i said was that with the ram you chose you can't get 1,5 gb, since that is 2 sticks of 512 MB ram. 1,5 gb is in fact better (that was the point of my post).
The ram you want to buy is this: http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=F2942894A5CA7304 -
aaa ok i see what i did wrong, i meant to link to a 1 gig stick rather than 2x512, i only just realised.
so i was right in my own head just didnt convey it onto the internet -
No sweat, that happens to me often when i think of something in the right way and the do it the wrong way because i don't pay attention.
