I have a Vostro 1500 w/ Nvidia 8600m gt. Today I dropped it while running and cracked the LCD display. I hooked it up to an external monitor, and everything works fine, so it's just the screen that's messed up.

I've decided to try and use this mishap to upgrade my res from 1280x800 to 1680x1050. Any LCD for a Vostro 1500 should work right? Can I use the original inverter for a WXGA screen on a new WSXGA+?

You should be able to, Vostro 1500 has the LCD locking connector plus the 2 pin connector into the inverter. If you do go to a 1680x1050 screen let me know, cause I was actually interested in doing that..

Hey I managed to upgrade to 1680x1050 no problem. Bought a used screen off of ebay with the inverter and everything, looks great.

I would not invest such a nice and expensive LCD for that GPU. 8600GT is a time-bomb which may go off anytime. Instead I would part it out and add some more $ and buy a new machine.

...or you can wait for it to die and have a nice screen left over :D

speaking of expensive, I've gotten several matte WSXGA+ screens for 40$ shipped.

Good thing most Vostro 1500 GPU were immune to the defective chips.

That's good to know, I was debating between 1680x1050 or 1920x1200 screen for my Vostro 1500...1280x800 is barely getting me by lol
