how easy is it to upgrade the processor on the gateway M-6850fx?
-
If it is similar to its big brother the P-6860FX, it will take 5 minutes. Yet I am not exactly sure as I only have the P-6860FX at the moment. God Bless

He made a typo, his sig states 6860, he accidentally typed 6850, which is not a laptop model.
It is fairly simple.
Gateway actually designed the notebook for ease of access and upgradeability. Just flip the laptop over and remove the plastic cover over the processor. Then remove the screws on the heatsink.
Then slowly rotate the heatsink back and forth a few degrees, so you break the bond between the cpu and the heatsink.
If you pull straight up, you may damage/destroy your current cpu.
Then put the new cpu in, apply thermal compound, like arctic silver 5,
and then screw the heatsink and cover back on.
It is a very simple process.
Just make sure that you update the Bios before upgrading the cpu, in order to insure stability and support for the faster processor.

It should be fairly easy if the heat-sink is accessible just by removing the memory bay cover (D)....(and compare it with the bottom view of the P6860-FX (which has an easily accessible heat-sink)
If it is, I guess you could go upto any Penryn, but I am not sure since it does not share the same BIOS with the P6860-FX (which supports upto Penryn XE).
You can check out the various models that share the same BIOS and see if any of them supports a Penryn or call up Gateway and clarify your doubts.
