I was thinking...would it be cheaper to pick the cheapest harddrive and lowest memory when customizing a computer then buying better harddrive and memory yourself? and also, is it possbile to upgrade sound cards in notebooks?
-
some people do that, and then sell off the components on e-bay. Some dont deal with it and go with medium configurations and upgrade later. I believe that sound cards are not upgradeable as they are already soldered to the motherboard.

Memory is going to be cheaper to upgrade later, but generally with Hard drives you'll be just as well off by purchasing the one you want with the computer. It is not possible to upgrade the sound card in any notebook that I know of other than an external solution.

In the Dell I just purchased, upgrading from the 60gig 5200 drive to a 100gig 7200 drive was more expensive than the price I could get for a new drive. because of that I didn't upgrade.

Sound cards cannot be upgraded in notebooks. They are always integrated into the motherboard.
It may or may not be cheaper to upgrade later. You have to do the research. If Dell is giving a 1GB stick free, as a promotion, then obviously that is cheaper. It tends of be that aftermarket hard drive upgrades end up saving the consumer money. -
Sound cards can't be upgraded, but you can get a PCMCIA card one if your notebook has the slot. You can also always buy a USB one.
upgrading after purchase
