my current machine is a e1705 2x512 ddr2 ge7900gs core duo t2300e. I already know in order to use 4gb ram u need a 64bit os and 64bit processor, which i dont but i plan to upgrade, but my ? is where can i get a pair of 2gb stick of ram for my e1705? Ive read it supports it here:

I do not believe that you need a 64bit OS or proccessor to support 4 gigs of ram. I think that the 32 bit processor will support up to 4 gigs..anything more than that and you need a 64 bit processor to address the memory. I'm not sure where you'd find the RAM--but one thing is for certain, it will be EXTREMELY expensive. Just out of curiosity, why do you need 4 gigabytes of memory? Most people won't hardly use 2 gigs.

ram and windows are kinda weird.
apparently there are weird restrictions as to ram usage in xp and windows in general, but you can certainly add as much ram as you want, even in a 32 bit OS.
the problem is that you can only use 4 gigs (theoretically, the number is actually less in xp, 2 gigs maybe?) at one time, but im pretty sure in some circumstances adding more ram could be beneficial or even neccessary in rare, rare, situations, especially rare in a 32 bit os because you can only use a few gigs at a time
i also would be interested to know why you want the 4 gigs of ram. my gut instinct is that i should dissuade you from this because it will be extremely lucrative, for someone other than yourself, and you will not get any benefit from it. -
Honestly i suk the memory insanely fast and just want to be more than ready for vista. I crave power. Even thinking of upgrading to sata ssd 16gb drive when available, now i know that sounds stupid bcuz lack of capacity, but bluray and hd dvd should help with their high gb storage. Besides i really doubt ill go straight to 4gb mostly just want to stick in one 2 gb stick and throw in another when im ready. like i said i plan to upgrade so i can use 4gb in vista
BY THE WAY THX U BOYH 4 YER QUICK REPLIES, LESS THAN 5 MIN. GOTTA SAY THIS FORUM IS MY FAV -

a pair of 2 gb 667 ram will set you back around $3000CAD right now
you can get 4 gb 667 ram from dell for around that much for the m2010
really pointless though, even vista won't need that much ram
and i don't think ssd on a laptop is a smart/good idea
anytime you drain your battery (especially a person like you who wants lots of power will probably want a powerful gpu which use a lot of power) you will lose ALL data on the ssd.
and i doubt the coin battery can keep the data on ssd for long
EDIT: it's $3,419CAD to upgrade the M2010 ram to a pair of 2gb 667mhz ram (a pair of ram worth a high end laptop, wow) -
im sure newegg has it, lemme go look...
-
wow, nothin at newegg, but heres a $700 2gb samsung stick at http://www.memoryx.net/imac2gbddr2667.html
-
here it is for dell xps should work in your i1705...

again $700... -
ty everyone for the input, im extremly appreciative. i guess ill just get a new processor and 2gb of ram, and maybe a hybrid hd once they're available. What i really want is a new geforce 8 gpu from dell when available, now i can really make an informed decision, i mostly wanted ssd to help energy loss, i know that using a cd/dvd/bluray/hd dvd drive drains alot of energy but i figured it was ok since i need to be plugged in to run games well anyway. I probably would just be using the new format to hold my games as they suck up an incredible amout of my hd (100gb). The basic idea was to run the games off the hddvd or bluray and cache them to a ssd drive. I guess it was a bad idea. I also read more ram=better battery due the cpu doesnt have to work as hard, and ive heard the core duo2 drains quite a bit more battery than the regular core duo, but i would like to add 64bit support to my laptop and didnt like the energy drain had increased. Also read somewhere it wasnt worth upgrading to 64bit unless u had more ram like 4gb as the performance increase would be minimal. My reason for my purchase of the e1705 was its reasonably good ability for future upgrade. I believe dell has already released drivers for their notebooks to allow support of the new core duo2 and its 64 bit ability. Plus I do game and dells have not only the ability to upgrade gpu but the ability to find the gpu upgrade from dell as most notebooks that allow mxm or axiom are next to impossible to find anywhere. Well it was an idea but i guess not a very good one. Thx for the informed replies. Like they say, "If you dont know the answer, ask."

Ok, mas5acre. Use the carriage return once and a while please.
But as for XP memory addressing, it will only address up to 3 gigs, you can have more but windows XP will not see it.
Also, about upgrading your GPU it’s no guarantee that they will even make a card compatible with your laptop, don’t bet the farm on that. -
i think you are horribly misinformed mas5acre
the C2D DOES NOT use more energy then the C1D
some times it uses a tiny bit less
i don't think you can run games off the blueray/hd dvd without first installing it on the ssd unless your idea of cache is installing a game on the ssd
and another thing you're misinformed about is that you need over 4gb of ram to see performance boost from 64 bit
64 bit allows windows to address more ram, while 32 bit limits windows to address only 4gb of ram 64 bit allow much more ram to be added on
the performace boost from 64 bit comes from when developers design their programs to take advantage of 64 bit code.
i don't think there are any geforce 8 out yet and even if there was a geforce 8, it wouldn't come to notebooks as quickly. In addition, don't you think the 7900 already drains a lot of energy? if the geforce 8 is still built on 90nm technology, i'd imagine it being a battery killer
also, i'm pretty sure you won't be able to upgrade to ssd from normal HD due to the notebook cutting off power to the HD when you turn it off, which must not happen with the ssd unless you like losing all you data everytime you turn your machine off
also, you can't upgrade any gpu unless it becomes an available future upgrade for the same machine (like if you have a x1300 in a e1505/6400, you can upgrade to x1400 but you can't put an x1600 into the e1505 because it's not an available upgrade for the computer on the dell site or at least no yet. so if the gpu is not available for the laptop class, then you can't upgrade once you get the best already). -
Thanks u for ur input but ive seen awesome things done it a dell notebook outside its product line. I nvr said the dell was perfect but it is the most likly for upgrade of graphics card, and yes u can upgrade outside the product lines. Check this out http://laptoplogic.com/resources/detail.php?id=31 Also ive read of ppl sticking new gpus in their older dells, or even switching from geforce 7800 to 7900gtx in their inspiron notebooks, and i know a geforce 8 isnt out yet, just saying i want one and plan to upgrade, and just wanted to say thx to everyone and told wat i was planning to do to end this thread. i know if i cached it i would have to 1st install it to the ssd nand flash, but hey it was just an idea nvr written in stone, im hear not only to ask questions but try to think out ideas too and get answers too, meant no disrespect to anyone, just like to think and smetimes even thinking doent work....

the gpu upgrade will void your warrenty and it is VERY rare for it to be compatible
in addition, upgrading one's gpu may cause over heat problems
you're right, it's not impossible to upgrade an dell outside of it's product line, there are many crazy talented modders, but just don't think that you will absolutly be able to upgrade your gpu
upgrading ram in dell e1705 to 4gb? Where?
