Can someone tell me the difference between generic ram and the ram made for specific machines? I don't know what could justify the huge price difference.

The RAM made for specific machines are tested for stability by the manufacturer(at least they tell us they do). They also offer guarentees with their RAM. This raises the overall development cost and so they are priced higher.
There are also generic versions which are untested and so cheaper to produce, in most cases they work but in some cases they might be incompatible. But if you buy RAM from a store who accept returns without any penalties buying generic RAM will not cause much harm(other than the time required to send the RAM back and wait on replacements)
upgrading ram with generic products?
