Now I'm new to the whole laptop thing, but there was a deal on dell and I got an Inspiron 6000, for 1/3 off, and it came with a radeon mobility x300 128mb. Now please don't laugh if this sounds stupid, but can one upgrade to an x700, or x800, if one already has an x300 on their laptop?

And how easy is it to add a dimm of RAM to a laptop?

    Thanks!!!

No, the graphics card cannot be upgraded since they are custom built by the manufacturer, so any other graphics card not designed specifically for the i6000 will not work.

Generally removing 2 screws from underneath the laptop is all that needs to be done to add more memory.

Thanks a ton, though I'm happy with my laptop, I wish I had known this earlier.

Well, if they ever offer a better video card in the i6000, you'll have a shot at upgrading. In many cases the card is soldered to the MB, meaning you have zero hope.

Dell is pretty good about having upgradable video cards in their lineups.

I had an old inspiron 5100 with an M7 that i swapped for an M9 on the Inspiron 5150. You just gotta make sure you buy the same form factor for your laptop.

for the Inspiron 6000, if they ever release an upgraded inspiron 6000 series with an X700 or something, you'll have a really good chance of being able to just swap the video cards there.

That is correct. Most of the time they are sodered to the mobo. I dont think they want you trying to upgrade :(

I personally opened mine up to see and yep, sodered to the mobo.

Dont try it, I think it voids your warranty, and, you can seriously screw up your laptop, and those will be some pretty hefty repair costs.

It is easy to upgrade the RAM, I do it to many notebooks. There is a small cover on the bottom of the notebook you can unscrew, and the RAM modules should be in there. Check the manual for the exact location; I dont have an I3000.
