Well I just got this laptop and it comes with a ml-28 turion and 768 Mb of ram with integrated 200m graphics and broadcom wireless. It is alright but would a ml-37 work with this laptop? I am thinking of picking one up for it.
    NorthBridge : ATI RS480M
    NorthBridge : AMD K8 Bridge
What are the chances the motherboard will support it ?

Yes. That's what I did, upgrading from a Sempron. Flash in the latest BIOS first just to be safe.

hmm i ordered one off ebay and when i isntalled it the backlight turns on for one 1 second nad the laptop powers off. THe ml-28 still works fine, and my bios is f.27. Is it a dead cpu? I tried taking the cmos battery out as well and restting to defaults

Wow, its not working, that is amazing. The TL-37should work without any problems in your system. The only difference between the processors is the clock speed, 1.6Ghz vs 2.0Ghz.

If the cpu does not work in your system, ou may have been taken by the guy you bought the processor from.
I would try reinstalling the Tl-37 and make sure that everything is connected properly. If the cpu still does not work, after a second try than the cpu you bought from him is bad.

You can always return your processor, and overclock the cpu you have in your system.
You have a ati chipset, so you will be able to overclock with both clockgen and setfsb.

You should be able to get about a 200Mhz overclock, so you would be better off doing that then spending more on another processor.

Now couldn't OP go Dual Core? RS480 supports, is it BIOS limited?

I would think that he would have no problem going to dual core, but his system is not picking up the slightly faster replacement processor.
If the cpu does not get remotely warm without a heatsink, than the cpu is faulty. You should contact the seller and get a refund or whatever you have to do.
You should be able to upgrade to at least a Tl-60 processor. You may be able to even support the Tl-68, but I am not sure how much your bios can recognize.

Do not go for more than ML-37 (or the low power version) because this notebook has a poor cooling system. I had it for 2 years and I can tell you that the fan of an older notebook will go bad; ML-37 will need more fan than ML-28. Plus, the HDD temp is a problem so you may want to upgrade the memory and turn off virtual memory.
THe CPU upgrade, while enticing and exciting, is not going to give you the power you may be expecting. Still ML or MT 37 will work just fine as long as you have a working CPU

Ah alright, the cpu does not get warm at out, i have also upgraded the hard drive to a 7200 rpm 80 gb hitachi Thanks for all your help guys. As for temp the hard drive keeps around 40-50 which is a bit toasty but not awful. I really do want the extra cache and speed for the processor. I could try the dual core, but i have never seen in all my googling someone with a dual core and a v2000 series.

Dual cores wont work. You have a socket 754 based system and the only mobile dual core Turions/Athlons are based on socket S1. There are no Skt 754 dual core AMD processors. I would suggest trying another one. I have seen people successfully upgrade to the MT series even though it isn't officially supported(results in Powernow being broken but can be easily fixed by using RM Clock). The V2000 series was offered with both the Sempron and the Turion ML series, it should support both processors.

The ML 37 should be a good choice. Anything lower than that wouldnt differ too much in terms of cost and improvement over the ML 28, plus the ML 37 was the top end processor HP offered with the V2000 series. So, yeah I presume you can return this one and buy the replacement on the same basis. Keep the option for returns open whomever you buy it from.
