Hi, my laptop has 2 x 1gb ddr2 667mhz cl5 modules, am I right that putting 800mhz ram will not work on 800mhz but just 667 and the same thing will happen with latencies - putting cl4 ram will do nothing and this cl4 ram will work as cl5?

P.S. vaio sz71 is not a gamers-oriented laptop so there isn't anything in bios connected with changing ram latency or fsb frequency or cpu/ram multipliers, only if I try some soft like setfsb I''ll be able to change frequencies...

Yes it'll revert to the slower speed that the system requires. It might run at the lower CL if you run it at the lower speed also. a CL5 800Mhz ram might run at CL4 @ 677Mhz. Not that you'll noticed a difference anyways.

I didn't understand, if I buy KHX5300S2LLK2/4G which is cl4 and 667mhz it will work like cl 5 667 despite bios or like cl 4 667 ? You've said 800mhz should work like 667 but with lower latency does it mean buying 800mhz cl4 will work as 667mhz cl3 for me?))

Hmm, all memory modules should contain information about latency in SPD and motherboard will use this values as default - is it right for laptop MBs?

the difference between cl4/5 isn't that much you won't notice it in everyday use. just get the cheaper ram.
