I kindly suggest that you forget about upgrading this 4 year old model and consider a new i3 (or even better, Sandy Bridge) powered system.

No matter what you do to that machine, the performance to cost ratio is not worth it.

At the most, the RAM - but even there you may be limited (is it soldered in?).

    Good luck.

Tiller, remember not everyone lives in America and has access to very cheap laptops. In many countries there is a hefty import tax or VAT exploding the cost of notebooks. For him a 300 dollar upgrade maybe worth it vs spending 1800 on a new notebook.

dinamex2 if you could download CPU-Z and post a screenshot of the motherboard specs, we could help determine if it is worth upgrading or not.

Any DDR2 SO-Dimm should work. If it's faster it will just downclock.

CrystalDiskInfo can give you some information on your harddisk.

You should have gone for a 2GB single PC2-5300 stick of ram. The max ram that your laptop can take is 2GB. 512GB of ram is soldered so you would need a single ram module because it's only got one ram slot.

To find out your drive you can do as suggested above or look in your device manager which you'll find in your control panel.

The only way to upgrade your drive to a noticeably faster one as you've probably read is to buy an SSD.

A BGA job to remove your cpu won't be cheap so if you wanted to hold onto your TXN and do this upgrade may be just purchase a core 2 duo motherboard which will work out about the same anyway.

Right click on each drive shown in explorer, choose properties, click the Tools tab, choose error checking, make sure you click both boxes on the dialogue box that comes up (do this for all drives showing in explorer), then reboot the system and go have a long supper, watch a movie and/or simply don't touch the system and wait until it boots into Windows again.

This should fix any bad sectors found, attempt to recover the data on the bad sectors (will move them to a good part of the drive) and your system should be stable now.

If the errors continue, that simply means that the attempted recovery of the data on the bad sectors was not successful: a re-install is usually warranted at this time (because you don't know how many other files have been affected/corrupted along with any indicated ones).

If a re-install is needed, I would also buy a new HDD at this point. Otherwise, you will more than likely experience the exact same symptoms (BSOD) in a very short time with the current HDD.

    Good luck.

    Hello,

Just wondering what Core 2 Duo mother board would work for my Sony VGN-TXN15P laptop.

Also, what SSD drive can I buy to upgrade the harddrive? It currently says Ultra ATA. Is that IDE?

    Thanks,
