the smallest amount of ram i was able to buy from dell was 1 gig (2 x 512). i wanted to upgrade to 2+ gigs of ram from newegg.

am i better off buying two one gig sticks or a single two gig stick and keeping one of the 512's in the other slot? obviously more ram is better, but would dual channeling work better with two matching sticks? and if so, how much better?

I think 2X1GB is the way to go, but many think more is better. The 2X1GB is going to be just a little faster maybe about 6% (est.) that is why I would do it. The other side is buy the 2GB stick you will end up with 512KB more RAM and if you want to upgrade later you can go to 4GB for less. And even with two different size sticks will run in dual channel. No correct answer.

Dual-channel RAM does not make that much of a difference. More RAM = better in most cases.

I would suggest a 1x 2GB stick, because they're about the same price as a 2x 1GB kit last time I looked. You can use one of the 512MB modules alongside it and have 2.5GB.
Don't buy 4GB, because your notebook won't be able to see all of it (unless you are using a 64-bit OS).
