I have successfully run a 2.4Ghz P4M 400MHz FSB processor in my C640.
There is a 2.6Ghz P4M with a 400MHz FSB. I have searched for one for years, and I have never found one. The 2.4Ghz model may be good for you if you can find one on ebay.
2Gb of memory is the maximum.
The video card is removable, but the highest it can go is the ATi card already installed. (radeon 7500)
The harddrive is upgradeable, however I am not sure what it supports. I know it uses PATA harddrives. However I have heard from someone here that the C640 peaks at 40gb in terms of recognition.
I do not know for sure, I can try my 160gb HM160HC in my C640 tomorrow. If it reads all 160gb, than I recommend you get the HM160HC for your C640. It is the fastest PATA 2.5" mechanical harddrive.

Get a new laptop man. You'd get something worth much more for ur money compared of buying a new processor ram etc. Your laptop is obsolete beyond doubt and there's not point in upgrading it.

Depending on your budget and uses, you could probably find a 'similar performing' netbook; but that wasn't jesterx93's question.

Sorry for the late reply.
I installed my HM160HC into my C640 and the BIOS sees 6375MB.
I am guessing that it cannot read all 160GB. It most likely has a 32 bit or 48 bit LBA restriction. I would stick with a Hitachi 7K60 or 7K100 series drive for upgrade. Keep under 80gb though as a precaution

I agree with the previous posters. With newer Core 2 Duo laptops in the $350-500 price range and considering you get a significantly better display(easier on the eyes) and faster/cooler/better laptop speending even $50-100 is not worth it. considering you might get $50-100 for the laptop instead of upgrading just add the $200 and buy a new or slightly used on ebay.
Sorry can't be of any help to your original question. -
I gave my C640 new life by installing Linux onto it. It just runs like a modern machine now.
want t0 upgrade my Dell Latitude C640
