hi, i've just got a wd my book 320gb external hdd that i'm going to be using with my laptop to increase the storage. I will be installing programs etc on it and wondering if it would be safe to leave the ac power plugged in all the time. I understand the usb connection into the laptop will be fine and it says the hdd powers on off with laptop but would the ac power still be on and would it be safe?
    thanks

I've got a 500GB MyBook that I leave plugged in all the time and it seems fine (can't say that I've felt the brick for heat or anything, but my apartment hasn't burned down and my computer and hard drive are okay). Wouldn't it be the same as leaving your computer plugged in but turned off?

I wouldn't recommend it,especially if you have important stuff in it.

Power surges and storms etc.? Or is there another reason it shouldn't be left plugged in?

I've honestly never been too worried about that kind of stuff, so I leave mine plugged in most of the time.

As far as the software that came with it, I deleted it. I really don't even remember what it was for, but I didn't need it :p .

I have a WD my book. I just copied the crap that came on it and formatted it. I use it for backing up my server and laptops and it works great.

My only complaint about the WD My books is they spin down after not being used for a while. This won't decrease the life any but it kinda stops them from being used for server duty.

Yes, you can delete that software before you put anything on the hard drive - that's the first thing I did (unless for whatever reason you need the software now, which it would state in the instructions). The pre-installed software is not necessary to use the hard drive, and I believe just serve as search and back-up utilities, if I remember correctly.

Yeah I deleted that software too. I leave my AC adapter plugged in all the time too. I haven't had any problems doing this.
