    Hello,

I am a soon to be Lenovo Thinkpad T420 owner in a few days and is in the market for a 7200 rpm 500gb hard drive to replace the one that mine comes with which is 250gb 5400rpm. I broke it down to two hard drives that I am considering purchasing but have a few questions about the wd scorpio black 500gb 7200rpm and the hitachi 7k500.

The questions I have are for the people who have actually owned/tried these hard drives?

    questions:
How is the noise in these hard drives?
Do they consume a lot of battery power?
If one is better than the other which one is it?
Last, reliability of these hard drives long term.

Having never used either HDD I can offer little input. However I have used several WD HDDs and none of them have ever failed and have always worked perfectly. In fact I still have all of them now and they all still work. I'd go with the WD Scorpio Black.

If you can't find any input, try newegg.com or amazon.com and look at the user reviews.

I can only advise you to go with the Hitachi. Using the 7K500 for nearly an year now - great speed, pretty much no noise. Can't tell you much about power consumption though, as I don't really care much :)

I have used a machine with the WD, I would say it is just as silent but I believe the 7K500 is slightly faster.

Anyway - both are a good choice. :)

I would recommend Hitachi 7k500 too. Both are fine in terms of performance however you will see lots of people complaining about the noise of WD.

I used 7k500 for 17 months and it was almost dead silent. After moving to SSD it is now continuing to function in an external box flawlessly.

I don't think you can go wrong with either one to be honest.
I'm personally using the 7k500 because it was the only one of the 7200 rpm 2.5" hdd's left, and was slightly cheaper than the WD.

Personal experience has been great thus far.

Add one more. Its a excellent and quiet drive and although slightly inferior to Western Digital one , its stil more reliable. I would suggest that. Many ppl on this forum like it too.

Another satisfied user of the 7K500. Slightly noisier than my old Fujitsu but Fujitsu is really dead silent. Battery consumption is negligible.
