hi guys, i just bought this external hard drive, but it has loads of softwares installed, virtual disk, smartware, and things like that which is crippling my system down. my question is, do i need them? can't i just use it as a normal external hdd? and how do i remove them? if i remove them, will i be able to still use the hardware encryption lock?

    thank you.

its upto you whether you want to use these softwares or not. for some people they are useful and for some just bloatware. you can use it as a normal external hdd. i dont think you would be able to use hardware encryption lock after removing them.

What software you keep does depend on what you're using the HD for. If you're going to back up files, perhaps there is a useful utility among all that bloat. Of course, you can just back up by simply copying your files over. If you feel the need to encrypt the contents of the HD, then perhaps Western Digital has included something useful for you.

Assuming that the programs reside in folders on the 2TB HD and aren't shown in Windows, you can just delete them.

thanks guys. they have now made a new software to remove the automatic virtual drive software which earlier couldn't be removed because it was saved in the rom part of the drive, plus i didn't use the usual bloatware software either. just removed both, and now i'm using it as a normal hdd. i can't use the drive lock now, yeah. :(

also i use ms synctoy 2.1 for backup.

Which model did you buy and how much was it? I'm thinking about getting this from my dad for his birthday, well something that can handle a lot of storage as he downloads a lot and it'd be better than having about a million dvd disks which is what he currently has lying around his house.

What do you mean crippling your system? Im assuming your OS is not installed on this, because it is external, so it wouldn't affect that.

Or do you mean in regards to file transfers? I would wipe it as the others have said.

it set me back 150 quid, and it is - western digital "my book" 2 tb.

omg i live in cardiff as well, near st. david's 2. :p

it had a virtual drive which would automatically load up in "my computer" whenever we would add the drive to the system. then, it had it's own pre-loaded backup software, and a disk-space analyser type software as well, amongst other stupid things.

A 2TB drive would make me nervous, too much to lose if it went bad lol. I have two 1TB drives instead. If you aren't sure whether you will ever use the included software, just do a copy of it before you format the new drive.
