up to 800 MHz only or 1066MHz? DDR2/DDR3? I don't want to screw it up!
...and I just look for 2 -2GB SO-DIMM DDR# right? are there any other specs I should keep my eyes peeled for?
Thanks!

That laptop supports DDR2 PC6400 and should also support DDR2 PC8500
Both are DDR2.
DDR3 memory will not work in that system.
You are better off with 4Gb of PC6400 at 800MHz, because the memory is cheap, and you will notice absolutely no performance difference between PC6400 at 800MHz and PC8500 at 1066MHz
You should be looking at a 4GB kit ( 2 x 2GB)
The chipset supports 8gb of memory, but I do not know if Compal restricted the BIOS to 4GB. So a (2 x 4GB) memory kit should also work

where can you find ddr2 1066

wow, that was very thorough. thanks!

sry meant ddr3 I think

DDR3 uses a different pin layout than DDR2. DDR3 RAM chips will not fit into a laptop designed for DDR2 RAM. (Pin's don't align)

PM45 chipset w/ DDR2-800 SODIMM slots means that it will support up to 800MHz (I have never seen DDR2-1067 but if it were to exist, would downclock) and only DDR2 (which have 200 pins vs. 204 for DDR3).

yeah, I realize that. though I have seen DDR2 1066MHz sold a couple times on the net in some obscure places... whatev, 800 it is!

It truly depends solely on the type of DDR your RAM is, which varies in number of pins in the slot for your RAM. Just make sure it's for your laptop's model, changing RAM in a laptop is different from that of a desktops..
what RAM can this laptop take?
