Depending on where you'll be using the laptop, If you mostly use it indoor at a place where there are no bright lightsource to the side or back, then the Glossy screen will look better, but if you have light source to the side or back or if you plan on using it outdoor, then you'll want the anti glare screen otherwise the refections on the glossy screen will kill you.

antiglare is what I would use, its more accurate with colors the glossy screen add contrast wich while it may be visually appealing somtimes its not accurate to how things should look so if you make a photo with photoshop on there and put in on the web, it may look dull to others because you use sub par contrast levels ect.

If thats true howcome all the 5000$ professional media monitors are matte?
a pixel lights up and the light excapes as what you see, the gloss screen causes internal reflections that boost the contrast.
If you can find me proof of what you say ill go along but from everything i know and have been taught, your the first to say otherwise.
The most professional grade monitors I know of is Eizo as far as I know they dont make a single glossy monitor. You can however make it glossy if you wanted to with something like this:

Because all TV used to be glossy until LCD comes along. All the Sony professional tube monitor used by NASA and all are Glossy not matte screen. Why do you think that most people agrees that Plasma (all glossy) have better contrast and colour than LCDs. Matte screen (Glass or plastic), tends to difuse the contrast and colour by their nature ( the litle pabbles that make up the matte screen) while glossy screen have no such problem except for the high reflection index. Look at all the Tube HDTV monitor, non of them have a matte screen.

CRT is not like LCD the image is projected onto the screen, LCD are light emitting diods...
They are so different you cant even start to compare them.
TV's are not glossy, they just happen to have glass screens.
and NASA is not a the type to use a professional media type monitor... Last I checked they launch rockets not draw them in photoshop. -
It doesn't matter if we are talking about tube or panel. It's the nature of the matte finish that is the problem. Since a matte finish uses uneven surface to create a non-refective surface. Any light source coming thru will get defused slightly (take a manifying glass close to your matte LCD and you'll see slight distortion even at native res). thus reducing the contrast and colour saturation. While a glossy screen allows it straight thru. If the same LCD panel is offered in both matte and glossy screen, all thing being even. the Glossy screen will alway have better contrast and colour.
Actually, The better manufacturer will have compensated for any difference between glossy and matte screen by tuning the onboard signal so there should not be much difference one way or another. -
LCDs and Liquid Crystal Displays. A layer of liquid crystals is Sandwiched between two panes of treated glass, and an electric current is passed through the crystals.
LEDs are light emitting Diodes, parts of electric circuits that allow a current to flow only in one direction. THis is an old technology, but it is being refined. -
ok, so what you are telling me is to get the glossy screen because it has better contrast and brightness, also i's just like to know if i'm taking the right decision buying a Dell 1720 core 2 duo @ 2.2ghz 4mb 2gb ram 667mhz Nvidia Geforce 8600m GT 256mb with turbocache 160gb 5400 rpm hard disk

It's a personal choice as far as screen goes, I've use both but movies and thing do certainly look more crisp on a glossy if you can avoid the reflection problems. The rest of your system looks good and should be a lot of fun.

CRT is projected to the screen via the cathod laser from the back of the tube. I for some reason got LED mixed up with LCD, it works in a simlar manner, there is a phisical source of the light present.
SED is where its at anyways
what display should i get??
