this is an important question for me in my search for the right laptop. i've tried a dell studio and had to return it and pay the restocking fee because the sound was so anemic and tinny.

advice? either something older (so i might find it used) or something cheap?

All of them will sound bad.

The 'best' sound I have heard on a mobile has always been on the biggest platforms available: 17" and 18.4" and bigger.

But 'best' sound on a mobile is still a million times worse than a 'good' sounding music system for your home. ;)

    Headphones.
That being said, I've always enjoyed the sound quality from my 6920G.

If you were constrained to built-in speakers and couldn't get external speakers or good headphones I'd say the MSI GT660/GX660/GT663...(all the same chassis) or check out some of the Toshiba media/business laptops, their harmon kardon built-in speakers are quite nice.

I would say the new Dell XPS 15, or the Envy line. Both have built in sub woofers.

Here is an excellent review of the XPS from anandtech. They said the sound was the best they've ever heard on a laptop.

The few Toshiba models that I have used have had good sound. I don't know if they would be up to your standards but they sound good to me.

Indeed they do. So don't go out expecting to be able to rock the house anytime soon. And just because they have a name brand speaker doesn't mean much either.

Still, there are some makers that do a better job at this than others. In that, Dell seems to be leading the pack. If you're looking strictly for the best (aka loudest?) speakers in the laptop business, I'd look to them first.
