I bought a sony N350E and decided to upgrade to 2 gigs right away. The sony sales guy told me any pc2-4200 memory will work with it. I don't know a lot about this stuff so I took his word and ordered 2 gigs of pc2-4200.

I received the computer yesterday and opened it up to find that the memory in the computer and the memory I bought are completely different. The memory I bought is about twice as long as the memory already in the computer. I also noticed that the memory in the computer says pc2-5300. I called sony (very bad customer service btw) and all they can tell me is that my computer should take pc2-4200.

So now I'm assuming that there are different sizes of pc2-4200 (but sony CS doesn't seem to think so)? If so what size do I need. Also why does every spec sheet and even the sony techs say it should have 4200 but the memory in it now says pc2-5300?

I'm sure these are pretty 'beginner' questions but like I said I don't know much about this stuff so any help would be great. Thanks.

You purchased desktop DDR2 RAM...you need 200pin So-DIMM PC4200 or PC5300 RAM (both perform about the same) for notebooks. The only difference between 4200 and 5300 is the clockspeed, but like I said performance is still about the same.

Sony vaio N series is suppoed to have PC2-4200 (which is 533 MHz).

What type of memory did you buy? SO-DIMM or DO-DIMM?

I from my personal experience, tell you sony's tech support is useless.

    I bought this memory. (Crucial 2GB Kit (2 x 1GB) DDR2 PC2-4200 UNBUFFERED NON-ECC 240-PIN DIMM )

    So I guess I need something more like this? (Corsair Value Select - Memory - 1 GB - SO DIMM 200-pin - DDR II - 533 MHz / PC2-4200)

Can someone recommend good memory that will work with my computer and cost about $100 for 2 gigs? Should I go with the 4200 or the 5300? As I said before my computer is supposed to come with 4200 but for some reason it has 5300 in it now. I know from searching that I probably won't notice the difference in speed, but is there other reasons to get one over the other?
