    hi i have a toshiba satellite M60 and was wondering if any of you know what type of RAM i need. DIMM, DDR, SD2...dont know what they are. also, i really like newegg.com and was wondering if its safe for me to buy from them? bcuz i live in canada. lastly, what type of hard drive do i need to replace this one?? like the RAM, i dont really understand the terms. all i know is that i want 80 or 100 GB with 5400 RPM. if i do get a new hard drive, do i have to install windows on it again? or is there a way to transfer everything on my old HD to the new one?

    NewEgg doesn't ship to Canada.

    For us, your best bet would be something like NCIX, or ShopRBC, or even eBay.

    For RAM, you need to pick out 533mhz PC4200 SoDimm ram.

    For HD, you need to pick out a 2.5" harddrive.

    As for installing a new HD, you will indeed need to backup your info so you can ransfer it back to the new one, as a new install will have a cleared HD.

    first of all, most laptop use SODIMM
    and knowing that your laptop is a 2nd generation centrino (Sonoma) it's most likely be a Pc3200 or pc 4200

    also going on toshiba website:
    * Standard Memory: 512MB PC4200 DDR2, 533MHz (512MB x 1) * Maximum Memory: 2GB PC4200 DDR2, 533MHz
    * Expansion Modules: 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, or 1024MB PC4200 DDR2, 533MHz

    I'm a nerd!

    Haha just joking(maybe ;))

    But the ram is running at 533mhz as yours and the new laptops uses the "Alviso" chipset which has a front side bus of 533mhz. The SoDimm is the kind of ram laptops use.

    As for the PC4200, it's pretty much a universal code for that type of ram.

    edit: Lazzzy beat me to it ;)

    well future shop doesn't have the best ram for laptop and pricing....they have ram for regular and old laptop...
    most of them being DDR and WON'T WORK on your laptop....you need DDR2 the pin configuration are different....I would go take a visit in those specialise store....a kingston Value ram 1 gb DDR2 Pc4200 SoDimm should go for about 140 CAD....
    you wouldn't find anything "high tech" for laptop at Future shop...since FS is a store for the average JOE....owing a good laptop is not being a average JOE more towards the geek side....so go see those store for the GEEKS (reputable specialized computer store)....good luck

    I am in the same situation.

    I have the Toshiba M60 and want to upgrade the memory as well. The kingston site says I need the Kingston KTT533D2/512 modules:

    http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurator/partsinfo.asp?ktcpartno=KTT533D2/512

    I want to know if i can use any DDR2-533 module or I need to get this specific type? are toshiba's picky about the ram or can any compatible ram be used?

    I'm loking at this 1GB OCZ module from NCIX instead:

    http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=16193&vpn=OCZ25331024VSO&manufacture=OCZ Technology

    thanks for helping

    Any DDR2 PC4200 533mhz SoDimm module should work.

    The drive in the M60 is probably a 4200RPM drive. The Hitachi 7k60 is very good. One of the best upgrades you can make on a laptop. Ebay one will probably go up a lot before auction ends.

    well, I went ahead and purchased the 1GB Kingston Value So-dimm, KVR533D2S4/1G.

    I researched it a little and it should work, even though Kingston tries everything to make you buy the system specific ram.

    1.5GB of total ram goodness :)
