can i put in my gateway m680
i need 2gb But which speed?

A quick look at the spec sheet for the m680 suggests that it uses either 400/533MHz DDR2 SODIMM memory.
Memory manufacturers like Crucial, Kingston also list 200 pin 400MHz/533MHz DDR2 SODIMM modules as being compatible with the m680. If you want more confirmation, you can check the existing RAM and see the specs which is ususlly printed on the module. Another option is to download and run CPU-Z which will list your RAM speed and capacity among other useful info. -
I have a 8510GZ, which is a stripped down model M680.
If you need 2GB, you need 2, 1GB modules. You'll need to remove the two modules in your machine, as there's only two slots, and it comes with two chips by default(2x256, 2x512 or 2x1GB).
I'm about to buy memory from newegg.com, as they seem to have the cheapest by far.
It's Mushkin and it's a 2x1GB pack(meaning both 1GB modules, supposedly tested and compatible for dual channel operation). $159.00 before shipping(about $5.00) for the set. The chips are DDR2 200pin SODIMM 533Mhz/PC4200. The memory speed you'll show with CPU-Z will probably be 533Mhz/PC4300. That PC4300 is kind of hard to find, and not really necessary. The speed drop to PC4200 isn't really and issue for a few reasons, but if you don't understand it...don't worry about it...it's not a problem and it's not a real speed drop in operation of the laptop. You can get 400Mhz/PC3200 chips if you want...but that would be a slower speed...so I'd avoid that. It's not gonna be much cheaper anyways.
Places like Crucial and others want $200 and sometimes much more for 2x1GB modules. Best Buy and other brick and mortars will charge you over $300. So newegg.com appears to be the best deal.
what type of memory
