Dual 9800GT's and (soon to be) 9800GTX's. Check out the Clevo D901C at the Clevo Guide for more information.

    I don't quite understand that.

    Generally its true.

But ODM's like Clevo have designed high-end gaming notebooks with standard MXM-IV slots so that they can have upgrades.

So far the MXM-IV for Clevo notebooks have seen:
    - 7950GTX
    - 7950GTX SLI (with Clevo D901C)
    - 8700M GT
    - 8700M GT SLI (with Clevo D901C)
    - 8800M GTX
    - 8800M GTX SLI (with Clevo D901C)
    - 9800M GT
    - 9800M GT SLI (with Clevo D901C)
    - Quadro 1600M
    - Quadro 2500M

    upcoming:
    - 9800M GTS
    - 9800M GTS SLI (with Clevo D901C)... not confirmed yet
    - 9800M GTX
    - 9800M GTX SLI (with Clevo D901C)... not confirmed yet
    - Quadro 2700M
    - Quadro 3700M

Thats a lot of videocards for one MXM Type IV slot... :)

Oh, no it's proprietary, or MXM based. Doing after-market upgrades is incredibly expensive, and its not really "Mainstream", those are only available to the High-End "boutique" sector of notebooks.

Yeah, that is if Dell's Proprietary 8800Ms are still around, or available at a good price....

    Nope. No dice.

Edit: Maybe, they don't use MXM, but I don't think they're soldered. Contact Dell and see if they'll offer an upgrade. There is a chance that even if there is a better card that fits the 1730's motherboard won't support it, though.

so if dell doesn't offer this next gen board in it's current m1730 before it's discontinued, the highest hope i'd have is for an 8800M GTX upgrade, correct ?

    Pretty much.

The M1730 is already outdated... since its a the previous generation platform (Santa Rosa).

All new Intel notebooks are Montevina platform.

I would not be surprised if Dell is phasing out that system in order to debut a new one.... maybe.

Have a read of the hardware stickys the GPU upgrade.

    What notebook do you have?

Sadly SLI is not a great improvement over a single card. And so far it seems that when the single card replacement comes out it crushes the SLI config?

Also I must say for all I know SLI is card specific?

And that is general. DeLL unless DeLL upgrades 1730? Not going to happen. Beyond tech bleeding edge more like Seppuku also known as hara-kiri.
