    where can you find your typical notebook fans?

    the ones inside our laptops. i'm looking to possibly upgrade a laptop and replace in another. any suggestions?

    I believe you will have to get the same fan as the stock one, you cannot "upgrade" your fan.

    The Fan's exterior, or kinda structure/architecture has to be absolutely same as the stock one, since it needs to be either fitted onto the motherboard, or the notebook casing. Better to stick to the stock fan. You can normally find such stuff on ebay, or the authorized Spare Parts Dealer.

    you have actually three options:

    1) what andy said, but that would take a long time to find a new fan
    2) you can short the fan controller chip on your motherboard, forcing the fan to always run at full speed (or solder the leads of the fan to a reliabale 5volt source, like the USB hub)
    3 you can contact a fan manufacturer, like EBM Papst and have your own custom fan made for a few hundred dollars.
    (Please note that if you get a custom fan, it 1) needs to run at the same voltage and similar current values, and 2) you may need to short the onboard fan controller, so that the fan engages. )

    ie, its too much money/work to do and you can only replace it with the exact same model from your notebook manufacturer.
