I don't have much experience as far as buying hard drives. I just wanna know if I can find some reviews that compares the same type of hard drives from different manufacturers. I am gonna put this into an enclosure.

    That's what I need

    - Ultra ATA 100/133 either or, doesn't matter.
    - 7200rpm
    - 320gb or 400gb
    - not noisy, i don't like hitachi clicking.
    - at least 3 year warranty
    - it will be used in an enclosure as an external one.

I know hard drives break now and then and there is not exactly a BEST hd. But which ones in that range produce less heat or have better characteristics
Should I get one that has perpendicular recording?
    it's a jungle out there! :D

    thanks

The biggest 7200RPM drive notebook hard drive is 160GB. The only manufacturer other than Hitachi is Seagate.

I've always had the best luck with Seagates. They are reasonably quiet, cool and sport a 5 year warranty. As for the perpendicular drives, I never used one myself but they seem to get mixed reviews.

I read a bunch of customer's reviews. It is just an impression. But it seems that seagate fail more often in the short time, then if they don't fail they are good for a long time. There must be some chart somewhere. Like % of failures

If you are looking at a desktop HDD then the Samsung HDDs run relatively cool and quiet and tend to have attractive pricing.

I have a couple in external enclosures and the only noise is a slight hum.
