    Hi!
Atm I have a FUJITSU MHZ2160BH G2 (K60HT87290EJ) HDD (160GB, 8MB cache, 5400 RPM) in my Sager NP5796, which maxes out at 55C temp. I would like to change this HDD to a larger, faster (I am using XP and the boot time+file copy time is a bit slow) and maybe cooler. Here is the two I am thinking about:
    -HITACHI 200GB 7200rpm 16MB SATA $117
    -Western Digital 320GB 7200rpm 16MB SATA $106

Which one would you buy, and why? Thank you!

The WD is sweet, it reaches ~45C load for me, good transferrates and is very quiet. Nice price too and a 5year warranty too.

I have the Hitachi 7K320 160gb drive and it runs very cool.
The idel temperatures are never above 109F on my Dell E1505.
In my U709, with active harddrive cooling, the drive idles at 84-90F.
Under full load after an antivirus scan, my 7K320 is around 118F in my Dell E1505 and 94F in my U709.
The 7K320 has one platter, instead of two, so it has faster access times, cooler operation and quieter operation. You should pick any single platter drive from Hitachi, WD or Seagate from their latest 7200rpm line.
The 80, 120 and 160gb models have one platter, and the 250 and 320gb models have two platters.

By the way, my 7K320's are very quiet, the quietest Hitachi mobile drives I have ever heard. They have a triple thick cover on the drive, instead of 1 used by WD and Seagate. This means the Hitachi drive can withstand higher pressure and force. This is why Hitachi is always mentioned as being the most reliable and durable. You can see it in the tech specs, the Hitachi drive can withstand higher forces and continue to operate because of this design. The three thickness cover also helps to block noise from the drive, making it run quieter.

Of those two drives, definetely the WD. It's faster due to the higher data density.

Also consider Seagate 7200.3. It comes with 5 year warranty and can be gotten under $100.

Both Seagate and WD have versions with Freefall sensor.

There aren't much notebook HDD's here in Hungary and these are the two bests I can find :(
So you say that the WD is faster, despite that the Hitachi's seek time is 10ms and the WD's seek time is 12ms? hmm...

    WD -> HITACHI

Don't know why but I do not think HITACHI is known for HD. Just my 2 cents

Hitachi is almost always recommended for the most reliable drives.
You better check your info ;)
With almost every drive they made up to the 7K200, hitachi lead the way in performance, but I think now with the 5K320, 5k500, and 7k320 series they have switched more toward the quiet end of the spectrum. The drives interface performance is a tad slower with these later generations, but they are noticeably quieter.

TBH i never heard of that hitachi has been "top-of-the-line" in a long time, always been seagate, wd or samsung since before the IBM deathstar-days, as long as i can remember ! :) But i do know that hitachi has made HDD's for a loooong long time! Especially for notebooks.
