I wonder in terms of temperature (under gaming/full load) which gets hotter?
sandy brige 2670qm or ivy 3610qm?
I dont really need the features which ivy brings over sandy but I will happy keep my new laptop a few degrees cooler if possible.
I assume 2670qm wont bottleneck any current GPU's? If so, to me, the performance gain which ivy brings is not important.

Depends on the notebook, since all of them have different cooling solutions.

Hi, i was thinking about Alienware M17x/M18x. Or 17" Clevo.
-
In the same notebook, same temps since both have the same TDP.
-
thanks both

3610qm will have higher temps yet on average draw a bit less power.

I was asking myself the same question, i'd like to get an Ivy cpu but am afraid that it gets hotter than my actual I7 2720qm ES. And regarding at how expensive are the mobile cpus on laptopmonkey now, i think i'll keep my 2720qm for a while

Why would you guys think it gets hotter, if turbo boost is more aggressive, then yes, you will get maybe one or two degrees extra, however, both CPUs have a 45W TDP and both are bare die so you don't have the same "issue" as the desktop of ivy running hotter than the desktop sandy.

Mythlogic tried overclocking the 3920xm to the same extent they did the 2920/2960xm but couldn't because it got much hotter. At equivalent power draw the IB chips ran at higher temperatures. This is probably the same for the 3610qm as well.

I would say the 3610qm will have higher temps for sure, and I can speak from experience on that one..

, the physics say you're right.

Your laptop will run cooler with the Ivy 3610qm but the chip will probably reach higher temps by a few degrees (heat & temperature of the chip are 2 different things). On the other hand intel has designed Ivy Bridge to run at higher temps (according to s|a anyway) so it should be fine.
If you're so concerned about heat & temps you can always get the i7-3612qm, apparently it's marginally faster than the i7-2720qm and it has a 35W TDP so it should run cooler and give you better battery life. I think I'd favor that one if I had to make a choice, 45W quad-cores are so 2011
which gets hotter? i7-2670QM or i7-3610QM
