i actually first got a hitachi 1TB HDD for my desktop but was DOA. had to rma it but i ended up getting a western digital hdd instead of replacing it with hitachi hdd. i'm actually glad i ended up with the WD HDD instead of the hitachi. WD HDD's are usually really good. i would go with the WD HDD. WD's HDDs are very good quality.

Both companies have a good reputation for drive, and for an 80GB harddrive they are probably going to be the same unless you know the exact model numbers of each. Flip a coin or something.

WD drives do have a reputation for being a tiny bit faster compared to a Hitachi drive of the same size; however, that comes at the cost of consuming more power, being noiser, and causing more vibrations. This is also generally a differnece of a few percent, also known as insignificant.

    Really, just pick either one.

Both are good, I prefer Hitachi, but WD is generally quieter. Anyway, you can't go wrong with either.

I like Western Digital for an External HD.

But as stated, both are good brands.
