so for everyday usage (i.e. word, internet) what component is most important? is it better to have a faster gpu, more ram, or faster hard drive?

hmm...if your not going to save lots of movies, photos and games on the hard driver, then you don't need a big one, and you don't need a fast one. It is an asset to have more RAM, but not hugely important. The better CPU you have however, the faster you could load programs and the more responsive the laptop would be. If your just going to do Web Surfing and MS Word, then nothing is really important, a cheap laptop would do fine. This is just my personal opinion, mind you, some poeple might dis-agree with me

Yep - General use - Cheap Laptop is fine - you can always buy some after market RAM as an upgrade and or faster HD.
If you are running XP get at least 512 unless the upgrade is not cost effective (then check out crucial or other online / retail shops for RAM costs).
Keep in mind 'cheap' Laptops are 'cheap' for a reason - it is not only the CPU / GPU (will be intergrated for sure) and memory - LCD , keyboard , speakers , limit on external ports , CD/DVD burner , etc overall build will be 'cheap' as well. That said if that is not a concern as the laptop will sit on a desk and not be subjecctive to constant travel - should be fine. -
I say the ram is the most important for basic applications. If you are like me when you surf the web you probably have a ton of pages open. This will help your computer run more stuff at the same time. Buy the ram after you get the laptop from www.newegg.com.

RAM for sure, it helps you increase efficency with the normally used programs.
which is most important....
