    An AMD Athlon 64 4000+ (2.4GHz) or Intel Core Duo T2400 (1.83GHz)

I know that the Athlon would provide faster performance (especially for gaming, which I will be doing) but is this boost insignificant?

If you are into gaming a good graphics card will give you better results than having the fastest processor. In the case of a laptop, the Core Duo will be the better choice and being dual core it will have the added advantage of better multitasking.

Thank you for the quick response. The core duo actually has the better video card than the machine with the Athlon, a faster hard drive, and I don't think that I will need the added processor power of the athlon because of the bottleneck with the video card (Ati x600).

A64 4000+ paired with X600, that must be the gateway MX7525. That is at most a mediocre gaming laptop. If you are looking for an AMD based gaming notebook, then the MSI 1039(yet to be released but can be preordered from resellers, I believe - check the MSI forum for more info) is your best bet....

But the Core Duo is probably the best choice for a laptop at the moment.

For now I'd stick w/ the Intel...as has been said, you'll find they're mated with better graphics card to begin with...

Also the Core Duos get better battery life as I understand it (for when you're not gaming).

Keep in mind that clock speed means a lot less than it used too when looking at the Core Duo "only" being at 1.83Ghz. Supposedly they're really at a factor of 1.5-2x the speed.

No contest, the T2400 is superior to the A64 4000+ in almost every way.

Except for 64-bit support, but that's negligible right now, of course.

I'd go for the Core Duo, hands down.
