I have a HP dv1708 with a celeron 410 with a 533mhz bus. The HP maint manual has multiple CPUs for this motherboard, including a T2250, which is a 533 MHz bus. WHen I swap CPUs, and power up, it just sits there and nothing happens (Except the power lights are on). On the older motherboards, I swapped the old celerons with a Pentium M and no problem. According to their web site, the bios supports the T2250. Is there some switch that fixes the motherboards to a particular CPU? I even took the battery out for 5 min to reset the CMOS, and that didnt work either.I even tried a T2300 (667 bus) and that didnt work either, so it hard to believe I have 2 bad CPUs. ANy ideas? Anyone had any success? THX

It might support the T2050 or T2250, but not any others, because the FSB is 667 MHz instead of 533 MHz (which your mobo doesn't support). Mabye you could try that T2250 in another laptop, or just send it back. Do you get any beeps?

IT doesnt beep, doesnt do anything at all. Display doesnt turn on. Only thing that shows it is powered is the disk spins and the panel lights are on. Doesnt get to the bios at all.

Does the laptop run if you switch back to the Celeron M?
Also
Which chipset does the laptop have, is it the i940 or the i945? If it is the former then the Celeron M is all it is going to support. -
it runs just fine when I switch back to the original processor. chipset not sure how to tell. under system devices in control panel, driver is 945/940, so that doesnt tell me.

Run it and see what chipset it recognises.
Comparision between the 940 & 945...

Hmm. Good idea. However, every method so far doesnt distinguish the two. Even in the intel chip[set utility, it only comes back with
945GM/GMS/940GML chipset identified. It doesnt tell which one of the two. Same with the windows utilty. I think maybe looking at the chip itself is the only way.ANy other ideas>? -
Ahha. Ran cpuid/pcwizard. Shows its a 940GML. Darn, I cant believe they cheapened the Mobo and used the 940 instead of the 945. to save a few bucks if that much!

well, since it costs 1000$ and up (normally) for a nicely configured laptop, would it not be sensible for complanies to make you buy a brand new computer instead of u upgrading your old one?
i know it sounds like they are cheating us (and it is in a way) it is the "best for the business/company" thing. -
The prior generation Hp and Compaqs that came with Celerons could be upgraded to PEntium Ms by swapping the CPU, so I was expecting the same was true with this new generation. After all, it costs more to have more than one MOBO because of stocking and tracking. Few people are going to swap because of the hassle factor. In fact, the only reason I didnt buy one that already had a duo core was that I really liked the form factor of the laptop I bot and went thru the trouble to upgrade it. That really sucks.

Sorry to bring back this old thread, i'm almost positive the chipset is the 945gm on the 1708nr. However, I have heard that HP will only let you upgrade these chips if you use ones out of an HP laptop that was used previously. I was just wondering if anyone has tried this before? I'm looking at buying a core duo from an HP laptop to see if it will work. Any input would be great.
why cant I upgrade CPU to core duo?
