Question is in the topic. I just wonder if there's some kind of explaination and whether it's going to change anytime soon or not. Or worse, if I have to wait for HDMI or UDI...

    Thank you

Apple switched to using DVI for their monitors sooner (and generally speaking, Apple has a history of adopting new ports/etc. sooner, as with USB - remember, when the iMac came out and only had USB connectors, they were ridiculed for it), so it has been more of a requirement for them to have DVI out on their laptops. You will find more higher-end PC laptops these days as well with DVI out as well though, and I've even seen DVI out on more mainstream laptops.

Well, so far I've only seen DVI-outs on desktop-replacements, docking stations and probably some VAIOs, but not on 14-15" notebooks from brands like hp, lenovo or asus etc. Are they waiting for the release of HDMI or UDI?

The thing is I want to buy a notebook (what a surprise), but none with VGA out since I want it to be a little bit future proof, but I haven't had any luck in finding one. It seems stupid to stick to VGA, although the advantages of DVI over VGA are so obvious.

@BoilerHorn: I'd consider it bad marketing to stick to something obsolete while others are already one step ahead, wouldn't you?

Well you gotta look at who they sell to. Apple customers are the types that would demand something like DVI for things like graphic design and video editing on large monitors. The people who would use the video out on a PC are businesses that use projectors. Most business projectors use VGA still. A dual-head card is not feasible so they gotta play to the majority.

Apple started using firewire first and now look most notebooks have it.

I'd guess that DVI is more expensive to integrate in a laptop, and it's not worth it for most manufacturers to include it. Apple is a good exception as noted.

I always try to make sure my laptops have DVI-D because I hook it up to an external digital display all the time and use dual-monitors.

Actually, it still doesn't seem like real full firewire ports have caught on. It seems like most laptops with firewire generally have those sort of mini-firewire ports that are basically only good for hooking up DV cameras, but not firewire HD's, etc.

I think it is not only Marketing.
I think, if you import Laptops with DVI to the EU you have to pay a special taAnd I don't think that it costs more x like you have to for LCD-Displays.

And I don't think on the other hand, that it costs more to inegrate a DVI instead of RGB-Connector. The V/GPUs support DVI natively.

The only difference between the firewire port on apple laptops and pc laptops is if the firewire device can be powered or not. As long as the firewire device is powered, there is zero difference in function/speed.

My $1069 acer has both vga and dvi ports, and it is a 15.4 wide. It is becoming more popular of a port in the pc world. While most lcds and crts still come with analog vga ports; laptops will start gearing up for the digital switch over.
