    wifi n vs g perfomance gains

    i am looking at laptops i like the one that has g in it more but the other has wifi n how much perfomance gain am i looking at and whats the main difference

    Network speed is the difference. If you are transferring files over a home network through wireless, then you will benefit from N as it's speed is 600Mbp/s, whereas G only has a top speed of 54Mbp/s. Of course, download speeds aren't improved unless you live in Japan or something, where they have 150Mbp/s download speeds. Really, N would help if you are transferring files through wireless, on a home network. Although, seeing as internet speed is always getting faster, it would be worthwhile to go N just for future proof.

    N is the best way to go. It is faster and each day it is more of a standard. It has longer range, faster speeds and supposedly better stability but I m not sure of the last one.

    And a N card is ABGN, so you can always use G while having a N card.

    notebooks with wireless n already built in usually have 3 atennas too ather the the 2 found in many wireless g notebooks so you tend to get better wireless range with wireless n

    Heres what i learned:
    802.11g + streaming 1080p HD = fail :(
    802.11n + streaming 1080p HD = win :)

    But you need to have a wireless router that handles wireless N standard or else you wont see any improvements.

    N works way better than g but you need a good router too...

    The "superiority" of N depends on the network and internet connection it's used on.

    If you have cheap internet or a cheap router, neither N nor G will save it, but if you have a faster wireless N router with a high speed internet, then the benefits will become more apparent.

    I have yet to see internet here in the US that saturate Wireless G.

    To take advantage of wireless N, you gotta have a wireless N router.

    So if you don't have a wireless N router, you are just throwing money out the door buying a laptop with wireless N.

    Half of notebooks come with Wireless N anyhow so it's not usually that big a deal, but I agree, most internet connections(even those labeled "high speed") aren't enough to outpace a Wireless G.

    It is and the funny thing is that my friends at work still happily tell people that N is faster when 99% of those people probably have internet so slow they wouldn't notice a difference between G and N :p
