Uh no the 8600M GT like most ''dedicated'' vid cards are part of the mobo you can not upgrade.

Actually, that's not true, the 1520 has a modular video card that would be upgradeable if Dell decides to release another video card for that same notebook (and motherboard).

Thomas yea he said it's comming out, first I heard of it. Your advice sounds correct. Now Dell uses a proprietary connector, how is he going to get one of those? Good luck. I think the answer is no for many reasons, they dont make, it won't fit, you can't get.

Either way it'll be way to long.
When it comes out only high end notebooks will have it.

This is a question to which there is no answer yet.
You can't say yes, you can't say no, simply because of the fact the (mobile)8800 DOESN'T EXIST YET.
Once it does come to life, you'll have to see if Dell releases an upgrade for the 1520.

but the 8800M is rumoured to be based on an entirely different chip, with lower power consumption/heat production
bottom line: you have to wait till it's released before you can say anything that isn't pure speculation

I agree, I didn't know it was coming out as OP said. That is #1 like you say. If it does how are you going to get a Dell version of it? Fat chance! Ain't going to happen.

Commen sense is not going to happen, 8800 power draw and so many more reasons it is not going to be an option for OP.

The OP is talking about the desktop G92, which will likely be (in my opinion) the chip that the 8800m will be based on. It's a 65nm process which is rumored to have half the power draw of ATI's 65nm process.

This is true, but I don't think you'll see the 8800 series in a 15.4" laptop due to heat output...well if it is 90 nm based....

    Hello,

This is Richard from Dell's Online Community Outreach group. I regret to inform you that there is no 8800 video that will fit into your Inspiron 1520.

I'd imagine at some point there will be. I can't think of any reason it couldn't be done. There are already putting 8700GT in SLI. Once the 65nm based cards are out, it seem like a pretty feasible thing to be done.

    Hello,

At this time I have no information about new cards that may be offered in the M1730. It just the nVidia 8700M Dual SLI, with 256MB that is currently available.

That's a bit Dells problem: they hardly ever give that kind of information. It caused me to investigate other options, which resulted in me getting a Clevo M570RU. If they had told me the 1730 was going to be released within a month or so, I would have waited and probably gotten that one. I would never have come here to ask about other options, and I'd be a happy Dell owner. Now, I know there's so much more. Next time I need a new notebook, I'll consider more options than just Dell, all because they don't give (enough) information.

Right now, everything's speculation. No company has released future plans for a laptop with the 8800m. Large companies like Dell have to be very cautious of what they release to the public. It's like playing a game of chess. Would you tell your opponent your next move?

1: I believe they know these things well before the market does
2: Maybe a 8800M is a bit specific. But my request back then was, if they were going to release an update for the 1710, to include Santa Rosa. And Santa Rosa had already been released for quiet some time :) They said they didn't have that information.

how long was the wait between the desktop release of the 8600 GT and the mobile 8600GT? It'll probably be similar to that. this is assuming the desktop 8800GT will actually be released in october.

My guess is we wont see an Nvidia mobile refresh untill q1 08. I really hope they update the 1520 with something new, maybe not a 8800 but something better then the 8600gt with gddr2, if we get anything it'll be based on the g98.

There is also speculation of a 1525, maybe a refresh with a new video card that surely wont fit in the 1520 :(

Hey Richard, I am curious if you are aware of any possible plans for any kind of new video card for the 1520 beyond the current 8600m.

Or is the aspect of the 1520 having a modular video card pointless?

Heh, so now if the 8800m really IS fitting in the MXM-II spec that means it probably fits within the power and heat requirements of a 15.4 inch laptop. Dell could really make a pretty penny if they allowed the 8800m as an upgrade on their Inspiron models.
