hey guys - first time post here. love the site and the forums - i'm amazed at the activity here!

i have an asus z8000 (z80k?). for a few months now, the cd drive has been having problems reading cd's - i have to keep ejecting and reinserting the cd with the to hope that it might read it. sometimes, i just give up entirely. i get time out messages or cannot detect cd in drive messages. sound like hardware or could it be software?

i'm guessing hardware, so my second question is where do i get a replacement? do i have to worry about getting one that fits, or are they all standard size? my current drive is just a dvd-rom, but i'd like to get a dvd+-rw. doesn't have to be the fastest - i just need it to be cheap, but i'd at least like it to be from a familiar name so i can get drivers/firmware upgrades easily enough.

You should be under warranty. Call customer support and tell them your problem and they will ship a new drive to you (and you return the old one in a prepaid box).

i bought the laptop january 2005 - that's almost two years - think there's still a warranty? I bought it from rjtech.com - would I call Asus or rjtech?
