i have three of these i ordered, and i have to say compared to the seagate they replaced they are noise as heck, ticking and clicking and whoosing etc.. i have three of them so i know its not just one bad drive.. anyone else have any noise issues with them?
-
seagate is the most quiet drive (HDD). So if you want HDD quiet as Seagate, well .. get a seagate, lol
-
Did you test them in your Dell 1730?
Maybe try changing the AAM value. -
You cant generalize like that Miro. Every model drive is different.
I know for a fact the 7K320 is quieter than the Seagate 7200rpm 320gb drive. I tested both in the same system, and the Hitachi was much quieter because the drive has a triple cover system on it which dampens the moise much more than the Seagates.
Z, I had issues with WD drives in the past where a whole bunch of them were loud and noisy.
First I would advise installing and configuring hdparm.
If the noise still exists, either get your money back or get replacement drives.

On what do you base your opinion that Seagate drives are the quietest drives? I’ve had 4 or 5 Seagate drives over the past ~3 year and they were consistently the loudest drives I’ve ever owned. They were definitely way louder than the WD drives I’ve had.
-
yes all 3 are very noisy. i have had them in 3 notebooks and they sound the same. these are NOT quiet drives imo.. i love wd drives and i have to say my older seagates were much quieter.

I think you're right zfactor. I've read a couple of complaints about the WD5000bevt noise levels on Apple forums.
Stange though, according to this review it's quiet:

The WD 320GB was pretty quiet. -
strange one is getting quieter as it runs longer. i just went back to check on them and one is def a LOT quieter now??? maybe they need to "break in" i never saw that before but i guess you never know.. i guess i cant complain i got 3 500gb drives for 77$ shipped each!!
though the other 2 are still making a ton of racket... -
I made my statement based on my personal experience, thought I've never owned a WD drive but have heard couple working (2).
-
hmm now the second one had started to quiet down???? ive never seen this before. im not sure why they need time to get quiet?? any thoughts??

I have used a WD5000BEVT 500GB to replace the pre-installed toshiba 120G 5400g on my z540, everything is good, speed, amazing quiet, no any noise, no click noise, the only noise I can hear coming from the CPU fan
If I have free time I will do some tests, and post the results. -

Hi.
I got a WD5000BEVT 500GB a week ago, and i can honestly say it`s the quietest hdd that i have ever had.
Now my External USB WD 3.5" 500gb on the other hand sound like a bag of hammers!
Model: WDC WD5000BEVT-22ZAT0
Firmware: 01.01A01

My WD5000BEVT is quiet. There's a slight ticking noise if I listen carefully but none of the clunk and click noises that some HDDs make.

Hi.
I found this WD UTIL is supposed to adjust when the hdd parks it heads and can be adjusted from 100 ms to 25.5 seconds.
I have not tried it myself yet, but it can be set to just show the current setting only.
the file is called, it has to be run from DOS.
