That has happened to me before. I removed the HDD and reformatted it after installing it in a different computer (via bootable usb).

Another option is to boot a different OS (linux for example) and see if that detects the drive.

If you have access to an external enclosure, you can also install the drive in that, and reformat it using a computer with a functioning OS.

how hard is it to remove the hard drive in these? i was thinking of just buying a new one, I found a wd 320gb 7200rpm for $70 should be a bit faster than the stock 5400 in it now.

On most netbooks, it is a piece of cake to replace the HDD. But without knowing your exact model, no one can say for sure.

Netbooks are mostly easy to take apart compared to laptops. Not as many screws, but the plastics seem to snap together more tightly. If you've got a plastic scribe, it's a piece of cake. If not, a rigid plastic wedge of any kind will do. I wouldn't use wood because the tool will deform and possibly leave splinters around. Once you've got it cracked open, removing and replacing the HDD is usually just a matter of releasing 2-4 mounting screws and sliding it out of the slot.
