Hey everyone, I'm thinking of getting my first notebook here and im leaning towards the z96j (unless someone wants to convice me HEL80 is better). My question is though will my z96j from http://www.mwave.com/mwave/DeepSearch.hmx?scriteria=z96j&ALL=y&TP=1
most likely work with the t5600 im thinking of throwing into it? I know it does via bios update but that wont do me any good if i cant boot up the computer (with the t5600) to update the bios. thanks so much!

Unless your BIOS comes already flashed with a Merom (C2D) compatible version, you would have to 1) pop a Yonah (Core Duo) in there first, 2) flash the BIOS to the Merom compatible version, 3) remove the Yonah, 4) pop in the Merom.

There is no easy way around this as far as I know, the BIOS is in EEPROM embedded on your z96j motherboard, to flash the BIOS you need to do exactly what you said in your post.

Similar offer than Milestone in Canada. I wonder, if they are offering the core 2 with the barebone system, I guess the Bios should come updated already right?
I'm thinking in buying exactly the same, also debating with the HEL80. However, I wonder if it would be better to wait tilll the core 2 settle in the marker (it wont be long)

You're likely going to spend more in the end by doing it this way than to simply get the system with the CPU you want in the first place.

I asked Milestone guys and they said that the Core 2 they offer (T5600) is actually compatible with their Barebone, which is an Asus Z96J.
I don't know what you guys think.

Ok, so I was checking around, and just at first glance there are other 2 resellers that offer this Z96J Merom (core 2) ready. So I guess it is out of the box.
    Great, isn't it.

You will need a yonah to flash the bios before you can throw the merom in there. Currently the bios predates merom support.

Ok, so your store was one of the ones I checked.
So, in your offer you said that your Z96J is Merom tested and actually the only processors you offer with the barebone are Merom. But now, acording to what you say in this thread then: it is actually tested for the one YOU have, but not for the one that you would sell ME?
    Please, clear this out.
The straight question is: If I buy it from you, will I have to upgrade it MYSELF before even could make it work with the pieces you sold me?
You know that wouldn't make much sense, does it?
Please I need a straight answer on this, no more diseaving publicity.

If you buy from us the z96j or s96j or any other model supporting merom without a cpu we will not flash the bios. If you buy it with a cpu then we will flash the bios. If you buy without a cpu the warranty is not ours. If you read the top of our warranty it does state that without a cpu we offer no warranty or support on the barebone.

I see, thanks a lot for the answer. So in other words, if I buy a barebone toguether with all that I need (Ram, HD, CPU), and the CPU I buy is a Merom, you will give me the bios of the Barebone already updated. So I can put the CPU (that you sold me) straight out. Isn't it?
    Thanks a lot.

if you buy a barebone with amerom cpu you get the bios if you dont get the cpu then you dont get the new bios
