Hi there,
I'm trying to hook up my 8740W to two external monitors and have the laptop monitor active too (desktop extended) via the nVidia 5000M (VGA-VGA, DP-HDMI).
As far as I know, nVidia cards are gimped and can't do this without Optimus (i.e. on board graphics required) regardless of a dock being available, the 8740w doesn't have this, so I can get the 'this GPU can only support 2 displays' message in the nVidia CP. So am I screwed, do I need to get an ATI card to do this? I see that it was posted a while back that it was possible with the nVidia cards with particular drivers but none were mentioned ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...ks/579926-hp-8740w-fx3800m-multi-display.html)
Anybody got any ideas? I really don't want to search for an M7820.
Thanks

For anyone interested, nVidia multi-monitor support sucks even on Quadros and HP and nVidia's advertising sucks about this too (had the same issue with 8760/70w too so it's all about the GPU). I purchased a USB-DVI Displaylink Device off eBay at little cost, and this does the job just fine for a total of two externals (one driven by Displaylink, one driven by dedicated GPU) and one internal (driven by dedicated GPU) all with an extended desktop. Would use dedicated GPU to drive both externals but the second is lower res than the notebook screen so (plus can't exactly use USB-DVI to drive the notebook screen anyway
). Obviously would not recommend using the DVI driven monitor for any fast moving stuff like video (although it's not too bad really) and particularly gaming.
