The registers were indeed erased back to 0000 right after resume, but I don't think that is the cause of the freeze because I can quickly write in the correct register value with setpci (or using the script event) right after resume but the freeze still occurs a few seconds later.

Also if the problem were caused by the register value, the drive would be set at MDMA2 after the freeze, but they are actually sitting at UDMA5 nicely.

Interesting.. Your laptop ICH8M based, right? That's the cause of the freeze most likely.

It could be BIOS thing also too or specific windows settings.

The only thing i can think of as a fix is to add my script to be executed on 'Power Troubleshooter' event additionally. Try this method and let me know if it worked for you. Make sure after logon registers have correct values.

    Yes mine has the ICH8M.
I did use the script event method to keep the correct register value, but the freeze stays. I tend to believe it's either my caddy has compatibility issue or maybe something wrong with my windows 7.
By the way I use the F0E BIOS.

    You've got 8710p or 8710w ?

Yes, it's a correct BIOS version which should just work. Did you put laptop into hibernation mode or it was sleep? When sleep mode activated - power light should be blinking. Btw, does drive work fine on the first laptop start? (i.e. no freezes or anything and already in UDMA5).

Very weird, I just did another test with sleep mode - it worked once again correct for me.

Maybe you just need to order a caddy from newmodeus?

    I have this one [IMG]

Instead of buying 45$ caddy I would sell this laptop and buy a newer and better one... even if it is used one.

    lol.

so do you really want to spend 1-1.5k$ instead of 45$ to get a hassle free upgrade? (ofc new laptop is better but only if you want additional storage why not just buy caddy instead?)

    good luck.

Do you know that using bad analogies doesn't help in debates? On newegg sale you could buy laptop with 2nd gen I-core (no dedicated GPU of course) from 250$ and above.

well, I can't follow your logic

instead of fixing one little thing you're advising replacement of the whole laptop.

    it's like - you've got failing keyboard/hdd - instead of replacing/repairing it - buy a new PC (even used).

    and tbh I don't see there even used 17" antiglare laptop for 250$ with 8Gb memory, 120G SSD + 1T HDD + 802.11n intel 5300 + at least core 2 duo cpu.

if you find me one, I'd be grateful.

I've put my laptop into sleep for 5 minutes - issue wasn't reproduced.

What's your Windows version? Do you have any specific drivers installed or devices ?

I have 8710w and its on sleep not hibernation. I have hibernation turned off since I have ssd in my main caddy. I am using windows 7 64bit ultimate and I do have the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver installed to ensure trim is working, which maybe suspicious. Too bad the other users who had the similar problem as mine is no longer active on the forum now, otherwise we may have better insights about this issue.

I don't think I am going to try any more caddies, I have had 3 ebay caddies since I bought 8710w. I guess I am just going to stick with the solo ssd and use usb HD for storage.

@kingzq, I have 8710w and thinking about adding secondary HDD. Did you successfully improve the speed? If I don't do anything, how much transfer rate between primary and secondary drive can I expect?

Would this one works ok? HP Pata IDE to SATA 12.7mm Universal 2nd HDD Caddy DV12

    Thanks,
    Deen

without altering MBR or software workaround you'd get 15mb/sec at maximum, because BIOS limits 2nd drive to MDMA2 mode.

transfer speed between primary drive and secondary drive depends on both drive speeds, I get average speed of 50 mbyte/sec for copying from HDD in 2nd bay to primary SSD.

from SSD -> HDD speed is 30 mbyte/sec.

NOTE: my 2nd bay drive is WD10TPVT

Thanks nbruser. Could you provide the link to how can I do MBR or software workaround? Which is option easier? My current setting has 3 OS. win 7 (main), win 8 and Ubuntu. I am planning on getting SSD and install Win 8 as primary OS. Then put Win7 (current) HD to 2nd bay along with Ubuntu. I am not sure how to make this work yet but want make sure that the performance when running win 7 or Ubuntu on 2nd bay is usable. It would be a pain if I have to move all 2 OS to SSD.

    Any suggestion is appreciated.

the easiest method is to use software workaround.

if you're using multiple operating systems you probably have grub installed for multi-boot? I think grub's script would be even better - someone posted already it here - search for it.

Here is a description of software workaround and mbr editing for Windows.

I'm waiting for my reward :)

Black Friday is coming. Do i really have to search any 17" laptop and tell you that there is no need to be a SSD there as you can put it there from old lappy or you just believe my words? ;)

Yes I am using Grub. Thanks I will do more searching

Thanks @nbruser. I am sorry all I can do now is to like you post. I am hoping to score a good deal on SSD.

I should have read a few pages back. It looks like I may run into problem @kingzq had since I bought a cheapo caddy from eBay... Hopefully it works or I may need to buy the Newmodeus.

    Happy Thanks Giving!

    Hey kingzq!

I think I've fixed the issue you had with returning from sleep (drive resets itself whilst being in UDMA5 mode) - check THIS.

The problem layed in the 4Ah, 48h registers.
