    Linux update

    The good news:
    - I got wifi "working"

    The bad news:
    - Its sloooow (300kbyte/s ~ 3Mbit/s measured on a N network)
    - The internal usb webcam does not work anymore
    - Maybe its just a feeling, but the machine feels slower, at least the bluetooth-mouse now sometimes lags (wasnt the case with a wifi-usb stick i used before)

These are the kernel parameters which allow this somewhat functional setup: "acpi_osi=!Windows 2013" "acpi_osi=!Windows 2012" acpi=noirq
Virtualization technologies need to be switched off in the BIOS, if not, the brightness canot be adjusted... (I know this sounds ridiculous, it is)

With noapic instead of acpi=noirq wifi is fast (5Mbyte/s ~ 40Mbit/s measured on the same network) but (at least) bluetooth, audio and webcam dont work.
With pci=noacpi instead of acpi=noirq wifi is slow and the brightness control does not work.

Are these the maximum undervolting settings before the system gets unstable? It seems the A10 already runs at its sweetspot... how sad.
The voltage on my Lenovo S205 coult be reduced by nearly 0.2V. (which increased battery life by 30 minutes :) )

Are you sure the nb_pstates get applied? Because on my S205 the np_voltage does not change...

If you ever look at the comparison between laptops with the Intel 15W ULVs and the full voltage 35W CPUs, there's a major difference in idle battery life despite both of them having decent idle power consumption.

From what I've read, the extra idle power consumption is caused by the additional VRMs and bigger power delivery circuits.

Wouldn't it be a nice surprise if the commercial FX-7600P is unlocked, so that 35W APU could end up being 45W or 65W when you are done if you have the cooling. Basically put it on par with the lower model desktop APUs.

I will pick up the 725 now, and wait to see if summer 2015 brings us some new DDR4 memory controllers to fix AMD's bandwidth issues.

Wouldnt it be interesting if the processor adapted to, lets say a noise level in sone?
This would obviously depend on the cooling system AND ambient air temperature.

As im doing hearing research, it comes to my mind that one could even take the environmental sound level into account and set the allowed noise level limit relative to it.
From: Inaudible (-20 dB) over "as loud as the rest" (0dB) to clearly annoying (20dB)

Because in notebooks, for me, this is finally the limiting factor.

Glad you got it working! This probably comes a little late, but there is a slightly newer restricted Broadcom driver available for utopic (14.10) available here. This driver installed fine for me on Ubuntugnome 14.04 for my M6800 and fixed issues with it's similar broadcom 4352 AC card.

Thank you nontheless. I will try that one too but I already tried the "vanilla" driver from the broadcom website and it did not help.

Edit: that did not do the trick. I still need "intremap=off"

Oh, thats too bad it didn't work either. Hopefully in a few weeks we will see an official driver from HP for it. Maybe it will even need a bios update, seeing as the intremap=off option would point more towards it being a bios bug...

Out of curiousity, have you tried any external monitors with the fglrx drivers? While I have been able to get my 850 to work with a pair of 27" LCD's on the dock in extended mode, the support is kind of buggy right now with the RC kernels so I thought this series might be a viable alternative.

The display port works properly with fglrx. I tested it with an DP->HDMI adapter.
I did not test the VGA port.

Ok, good to know. Would you mind testing something for me if you have time? Plug it in to the external display, then put the laptop to sleep. Disconnect the external display while it is sleeping, then turn it back on. Does the internal LCD come on or does it show a black screen and act locked up?

Of course. I will test it later this day and let you know.

Edit: Yes this works as it should. Connected VGA, suspend to ram, remove VGA, wake up. everythink works normally.

Awesome. Thanks for testing it. It sounds like the pure AMD platform works pretty good with the fglrx driver. How has the battery life been? My Elitebook 850 usually sits around 8-9W in powertop and can last 5-6 hours.

Yes, the Laptop now works fine. No stalls, hangs, weird issues so far.

But the battery life is somewhat disappointing at the moment, I get only 3 hours, maybe 4... depending on the usage.
I replaced the RAM with a kit of 2x8Gb DDR3L ram and also replaced the HDD with a Samsung SSD, which may play a role.
I also installed tlp and tlp-rdw ( linrunner.de: TLP – Linux Advanced Power Management), which might interfere.
At the moment ACPI reports 12.5W, but sometimes it jumps up to 15, or even 25W. I dont trust the values.

Yes it was. These seemed most max stable for me.

Which APU did your S205 have?

AmdMsrTweaker said the nb p state voltage changed. Also the multiplier could be lowered.

The CPU/GPU temperature did not exceed 63.4*C during a 15 minute run of Prime 95 and FurMark (24*C room temp.).

While running those two apps, I did notice that HWiNFO64 reports:

    CPU CU0 Power 3.457 W (8.652 W Max) (1.348 W Min)
    CPU CU1 Power 3.477 W ( 8.691 W Max) (1.086 W Min)
    CPU Package Power 20.965 W (25.730 W Max) (9.504 W Min)
    GPU Power 9.961 W (14.652 W Max) (3.813 W Min)

I am now awaiting my third 725...

Wow, that is pretty low battery life. Hopefully some tweaking can be done to help.

I noticed this morning that these machines can now be custom ordered with Ubuntu in the USA. They even have a UWVA Antiglare 1920x1080 display option on the 14" model. It is weird though, because the quickspecs say that it should be a touchscreen even though they make no mention of it. Sadly still no UWVA available on the 15" model, but it doesn't suprise given that the Elitebook 850 doesn't have the option either.

I was able to play a YouTube 4K video with my 725. I would like to get my hands on a 4K video to run without internet though.

Its good to see more 1080p IPS displays in these Kaveri laptops!

    FreeDOS
    Ubuntu
    Windows 7
    Windows 8.1

So can I assume with Ubuntu available as a OS option, Linux support will be better in regards to drivers (chipset, video, miracast, HSA, etc.), bug fixes, or even improved battery life? It's nice to see HP providing support for the AMD 700 series. I am looking forward to using Linux more on my 725.

Speaking of which I received my third J5N82UT. This latest one seems to run the coolest of all the models I've had in my possession. I'm liking it so much all over again. I'll double check the voltages on this chip to see if its different than the last.

Also, I'm really liking the USB charging port on the left-hand side of the laptop. I can plug in my Moto X to charge while I'm using the computer and go on the internet at the same time.

I am also using 2 external Asus VS229 1080p 75 Hz displays connected through VGA and DP-MiniDP-HDMI in extended mode and it gives me even more work space. I want to get the slim 2013 dock and see if I can connect 3 external displays plus the internal 1080p display. My A10-4600M HP ProBook 6475b and dock is able to display on 4 displays at once in extended mode. Pretty impressive coming from iGPU.

Glad you were able to finally get a defect-free version of your laptop. I would attribute the temperature differences more to a better factory paste job.

HP documentation says that the system has a limit of three displays when using the dock. However, the dock is probably one of the easiest to use and still worth the money. It comes with its own AC Adapter so you can leave the one that came with your laptop in its bag.

The Ubuntu thing is pretty cool. Hopefully in a few weeks HP will post the relevant drivers for it. It would be awesome if HP would step forward and offer a preconfigured model with Ubuntu on it. If they could hit something around a $750 price point I think it would sell like hotcakes. Everything from system 76 is more expensive and bulkier than this 700 series, probably gets worse battery life. The XPS 13 is nice but costs $1500 with Ubuntu which really is kind of sad given that the Windows version costs less.

Wow, I got lucky to find this thread, and it seems that all those who had HP Probooks 6475b are now getting ready for the Elitebook 725 g2 ;)
Count me as one of them, my Probook 6475b has served me very very well for almost 2 years, but the 725 g2 seems too tempting.

I have one question, that while DavidRicardo86 has already answered it, I want to make sure that the final word on the topic has been said:
The 725 g2 has a m.2 slot, that according to specs is WWAN only, but I wonder if anyone has tried using a M.2 SSD, or if we are discarding it as SSD capable simply based on what HP said.
Has anyone actually tried to put a M.2 SSD in the 725?

In the Probook 6475b, some models had the msata slot that was actually capable of taking a msata SSD. I wonder if the 725 g2 might be a similar story.

    Thanks everyone

    Alex

I wouldn't be surprised to learn it had a better factory paste job. The voltages for this A10 PRO-7350B are indeed a bit lower for some of the multipliers. What ever the case may be, it feels like it runs cooler.

I just ordered the perfect looking HP 2013 UltraSlim Docking Station will try and test if 3 external 1080p displays + 1 internal 1080p display is possible. I'll let you guys know. I can definitely use a good dock like this and the organized cable connections alone will make it worth the cost to me.

    Linux support for all! :D

Alex, welcome, I am willing to try and see if an M.2 SSD will work in the WWAN slot. I just measured the space and it appears a 42mm M.2 NGFF SSD would fit in there. Currently the largest capacity 42mm M.2 NGFF SSD is the Transcend TS256GMTS400 for $141.

    Amazon.com: Transcend 256 GB SATA III 6Gb/s MTS400 42 mm M.2 SSD Solid State Drive TS256GMTS400: Computers & Accessories

I might pick up one of these up for $10 to test to see the slot can be used for an SSD before I buy an actual m.2 ngff ssd.

You cannot even configure them with Ubuntu Linux and the 1920x1080 touchscreen. You cant get touchscreen with Linux, but with the 745 you can still get Linux with the 1920x1080 screen.

Hi David, thank you very much for the reply!

I will follow with interest if the M.2 slot can take a SSD, a 256GB SSD is perfect in size as the HDD can still be kept in there for storage. Do you happen to know if the docking station with eSATA (HP 2570p) will fit the laptop. If it takes it, I might dot he jump.

The 6475b, as many of you experienced it, a very fine machine but awful screen, decent size but a little heavy and chunky. This one fixes some of those shortcomings.

    Thanks again.

ps. My 6475b didn't have the msata for WWAN (B5P19UT#ABA) To go SSD + HDD I had to buy the caddy for the ODD bay. Not as elegant, but Toshiba Q pro 256GB + HGST Travelstar 7K1000 1TB make a very nice storage combo ;)

Whats pretty nice is that the 725 configurable has a 28% discount, 745 configurable has a 30% discount and the 755 configurable has a 33% discount.

Although I am still just looking at getting the Smart Buy 725, because even selecting the minimal options of Windows, RAM, HDD, etc...it still costs more than the Smart Buy with 1080P touchscreen and 180GB SSD already there so less cost for me later.

HP is really hard over about not allowing any discount on the Smart Buys, since they are already discounted, but in the Home store they hand out coupons and discounts left and right. Even though I was also puchasing the HP X360 13z they would only give me free shipping on the EliteBook 725, which comes with the Home store already. I even pointed out that I can get the same configuration for about $45 less and not have to pay tax on reseller sites. I had even planned to pay more for the accidental damage protection. Didn't matter to them, so I ordered it at Provantage. Anyone have experience with Provantage? DirectDial had it for a little less, but would require me to pay CA sales tax. I don't mind paying sales tax when buying from the OEM, but they refused to do anything for me, even though I have purchased three other HP laptops from them in the last 5 years.

Kind of a turn off. If someone else made some decent AMD based laptops I would buy that, but HP at least has been competition friendly in that respect. I thought Lenovo would be more AMD friendly, and they have some, but nothing too attractive, just a 15" ThinkPad.

HP Small & Medium Business is really a different beast than HP Home & Home Office. They will work with you if you are buying in quantity, which makes sense for most businesses. My friend (who works in IT) will usually place an order for at a minimum 10 machines and you can bet they give him a great discount when he does. For an individual I think they more or less expect you to get it through a reseller.

Provantage is a good reseller from what I have heard. I prefer Newegg, but if you are in CA then obviously they aren't a good option for you. Hopefully yours doesn't have any screen issues like davidrecardo86 had with his. If you did, you could always just get the onsite upgrade for the warranty and just have them swap the part in 2-3 days rather than having to wait 2 weeks for an exchange.

Alex, are you referring to this dock connector 1?

    Or this dock connector 2?

I had first purchased from Comet Supply, then ShopBLT and finally DirectDial. Each one was reasonably easy and pleasant experience aside from the unit defects. All three charged less than direct from HP, and all three didn't charge me tax. In the end I went with DirectDial as it cost the least and the third try was a solid unit without defects as far as I can tell. Yesterday I did experience some notice Bluetooth lag, it was annoying. I'll chock it up to interference or software bug but will keep an eye on it regardless.

HP has always been a major supplier of AMD based laptops.

The 2013 Ultraslim Dock (that is compatible with this series) does not have eSATA. If HP ever gets around to releasing the Probook 645/655 refresh those should be compatible with the advanced dock which has eSATA.

Looking at those photos it seems that the FCH is not integrated with the APU. That probably helps things a little compared to the Intel PCH which eats into the TDP of the ULV processor.

If the 42mm M.2 SSD does work I think there are finally 256GB models available. I have the 128GB MyDigitalSSD drive in my Elitebook 850 and it works ok.

I tried that, but their supposed discounts from the US site still don't beat their Smart Buy prices. In the US at least, you can get 30% off the Elitebook 745 with a coupon HP shows when you go to configure it. Even with the 30%, its a couple hundred from the Smart Buy, Pre-Configured price.

My 725 should be here by the end of the week and I have a set of 2133 Kingston HyperX RAM that is CL9 at 1600, so will see how it runs in there.

I am curious to know if the Kaveri IMC can utilize 2133 RAM (or faster than 1600).

I've only used my 725 on battery a few times but it hasn't been that great. I haven't actually timed it but the Windows battery meter read 5 hours. Maybe I need to do some charge/discharge cycles or calibration?

So this just happened to me right now while running these apps:

    1. I had 3 Google Chrome windows with multiple tabs open
    2. I had Minecraft running in an online multiplayer
    3. On Power Saver, battery, Bluetooth internet connection

When all the sudden I accidentally hit "fn + f3" and the computer went to sleep but it never actually went to sleep. The screen went black, the SSD showed some activity but sleep mode never happened. It just hung there. I tried closing the lid and opening the lid several times. I then pressed the power button and the computer restarted. After the HP logo appears, the computer displayed a message regards "Embedded Controller Recovery." I have no idea what that was about. I want to be able to submit bugs and errors to HP as this shouldn't have happened in the first place.

I got this BSOD this morning when I open the lid to wake the computer from Sleep. Anyone have an idea what it means?

That happens in Windows 8.1 a lot, don't worry though it is actually a nice and automatic way of detecting errors, reporting them back to microsoft finding some fixes and then applying them while restarting or after that. Its a lot less pain than previously when you had to report the issues manually and then it would find no foxes because the general public didn't even bother fixing their PCs and Microsoft didn't have enough data and it took a while for them to make fixes through updates. Now that its automatic things are a lot quicker since they get all that data.

I got my elitebook 745 yesterday. My pstates are bad as hell.

They sent me the wrong model. I ordered the 14" with 1600x900 and got 14" with 13x7. Also no illuminated Keyboard on the model i got.
The TN-Panel is pretty bad, i mean really bad. Kontrast is beyond good and evil and the viewing angles ... lets talk about something different! ;)

I received my dock yesterday and I have to say its quite nice. The additional USB 3.0 ports (plus charging USB 3.0 port) are always welcomed as are the external display ports. In total, I have 6 USB 3.0 ports at my disposal (dock and laptop ports) and two of which are of the charging type. The dock also angles the laptop keyboard into a more comfortable typing configuration. It would be really cool (pun intended) if HP started implementing fans into these docks as it could really help lower the operating temperatures. With my Cooler Master 3-fan laptop cooler was able to drop the temps by up to 10*C! On the 700 series it makes a big difference as the external case is magnesium alloy and a fan really helps transfer heats away from the internal components.

    HP 2013 UltraSlim Docking Station
    B&H # HED9Y32UT Mfr # D9Y32UT#ABA $143.55

Using the dock in enxtended mode I can now confirm that I am able to use:

    Internal = 1920 x 1080 = eDP
    External = 1920 x 1080 = DisplayPort-to-HDMI
    External = 1920 x 1080 = DisplayPort-to-HDMI
    External = 1920 x 1080 = VGA-to-VGA

I tried to connect a 5th display using the laptop VGA and DisplayPort but the maximum number of displays in extended mode that can be used at one time appears to be 4 total.

When connected to the dock, the laptop VGA port doesn't work correctly as I was getting a distorted image on the display. On the other hand, while connected to the dock the laptop DisplayPort does work correctly however I had to use a DisplayPort-to-MiniDP-to-HDMI adapter(s).

Again, the total number of displays that can be used in extended mode at one time is 4 total. Whether you want to use all three DisplayPorts at once, or two DisplayPorts plus VGA is totally up to you. For the sake of simplicity I will be using the dock's DP+DP+VGA ports for my psuedo "4K display" setup. :p

Yeah, I am going to test it out, but I also have a set of ADATA 1600 CL9 4GBx2 that I might put in there if it won't utilize faster than 1600.

Looks like my 725 won't be here until next week though, with some reshipping trickery that ProVantage does to avoid sales taxes. I also have the HP X360-13z on the way, so will be able to see how the ULV Kaveri compares to the best of the Beema APUs, the A8-6410 (also testing to verify it accepts 1866 RAM).

And I was confused about that slim dock until I looked at those pictures above, very neat the dock connector on the side, didnt even notice that before.

Can we just split the DisplayPort on the laptop into two or three displays?

You can use it with a DisplayPort hub but you might as well get the dock. It is a very well made and fits the 725 / 820 perfectly.

As an interesting note I think the dock VGA port is actually a third DisplayPort, but they are using a DP->VGA adapter permanently built into the dock. The four display limit makes sense. The higher end Firepro card has the same limit. It can only go to six total if you are using hybrid graphics with the Intel GPU enabled.

Anyone get this error or know what its about? I get this error some times when I wake the computer from sleep. I also noticed that in the Device Manager there was a Windows Location Provider Sensor device with a yellow exclamation mark as if it has failed. If it happens again I will get a screenshot of it too. That's it, I'm going to be joining the HP community forums and start submitting these issues I am seeing so HP can get to work on fixes for us. :/

For some reason I am unable to access the HP forums. When I click the Enterprise Business Support Forums or the Consumer Support Forums I get the following message:

Can you guys access the forums? !?

When I spoke with HP sales representatives last month and informed them that I was a college student, they wouldn't budge and told me to either buy in bulk or buy a cheaper model.

One of them even recommended me to look at HP's Envy consumer laptops when I said that $929 was a bit too expensive for me.

I can access the forums and searched for your issue, nothing there yet. I think aa is an ACPI AHCI error, power management because you were in sleep mode and the OS had to boot back up and some glitch in IRQ management. Perhaps the OS tried to access the SSD before the link was negotiated or something due to the SSD being "turned off" by power management.

Battery life sucks on this very expensive computer. For $1200 I would've expected 8-10 hr battery life. Instead I've got the Windows battery meter reading back 2 hr 37 min at 77% while surfing the net and a bunch of tabs/windows open on Power Saver, screen brightness on the lowest, keyboard backlight off! BAH!!!! I gotta get a new hobby.

Well, it comes with a tiny battery, so I think they expect that you won't be using it on battery much, and if you will be, you will purchase the extra battery pack. Its nice to reduce the weight and size using the smaller battery, but this is still a 20 Watt APU. I'm fine with it only getting 4-5 hours of battery life, what I was expecting. Its better than my old heavy ThinkPad with a 6-cell battery that uses a crummy old 20W Intel C2D and Intel graphics, when it was new. The huge 9-cell I use in it has degraded so much it now barely will last 3 hours.

    Thoughts that come to mind....

Q1. What is the watt-hour capacity of the battery in your Elitebook 725 ?

HP's data sheets show a choice:

    Elitebook 725
    Power
    3-cell (26 WHr) HP Long Life;

3-cell (46 WHr) HP Long Life
    Elitebook 745
    Power
    3-cell (24 WHr) HP Long Life;

3-cell (50 WHr) HP Long Life

Secondary battery support: 6-cell (60 Whr) slice
    Elitebook 755
    Power
    3-cell (24 WHr) HP Long Life;

3-cell (50 WHr) HP Long Life

Secondary battery support: 6-cell (60 Whr) slice

AMD claimed 8 hrs ≈ 480m Wifi browsing on a 58Wh battery (on a different machine).

Your HP Elitebook 725 expected total battery life while browsing:

    2h37m / 0.77 = 157m / 0.77 ≈ 203m = 3h23m

Ratio of your minutes to AMD's minutes:

    203m / 480m ≈ 0.42

    Expected size of your battery:

    0.42 * 58Wh ≈ 24Wh

So your HP Elitebook 725 battery reading while browsing seems to confirm AMD's claim, if your battery is a 24Wh or 26Wh battery.

Other factors that might affect the battery life...

    Q2. Calibrated battery gauge?

    Q3. Which operating system --- Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 ?

Q4. Which browser? Ad blockers? Flash blockers?

Q5. Are you using Wifi or WWAN? How far away is the Wifi router or WAN tower? In sight or walls?

I tried splitting the DisplayPort on the laptop to multiple external displays but it wasn't possible. Maybe I wasn't doing something right but I tried the two following adapters with a DisplayPort-to-MiniDP adapter:

    1. StarTech.com MDP2DPDVHD - MiniDP-to-DP/HDMI/DVI-D Dual Link
    2. Generic eBay - MiniDP-to-VGA/HDMI/DVI-I Dual Link

Connecting two displays at the same time to these adapters resulted in the displays switching to the one most recently connected. So only the internal display and one external display was possible. Daisy-chaining DisplayPort displays would be possible I assume with a DisplayPort MST Hub but those are expensive and hard to come by from what I remember. I agree, get the HP 2013 Slim Dock as its meant for the 800/700 series EliteBooks (and more) and will get you a cleaner, and neater setup plus 3 external dispalys.

I am currently using Samsung 1.35V 1600 CL11 RAM so I am also curious to see what your CL9 will do too! I remember HTWingNut did some testing back in the day on Llano APUs and lower CL RAM resulted in slightly better graphics performance so it should make a small noticeable difference. If you got it and if 1600 is all that the A10 PRO-7350B will support then you might as well use the lowest CL possible. Eventually I'd like to change the clocks of my Samsung RAM with Thaiphoon Burner as Its suppose to be quite flexible and overclockable.

Lastly, as for the 15W Beema A8-6410 vs 19W Kaveri A10 PRO-7350B, its actually very close in performance. Now I know its just one benchmark but If you go look up Geekbench 3 results (some of the Kaveri results which were from me) for these two APUs you will see that they perform very closely, with the A10 PRO-7350B taking the lead as you would think it should. However, the A8-6410 isn't that far behind which is very impressive. AMD did a excellent job there in my opinion and makes you question ULV Kaveri's existence, almost.

    Highest Geekbench 3 Results

    A8-6410 15 W TDP Beema
    Single-Core Score: 1333
    Multi-Core Score: 3838

    A10 PRO-7350B 19 W TDP Kaveri
    Single-Core Score: 1529
    Multi-Core Score: 4004

Of course these results will vary from user to user, system to system, config to config, benchmark to benchmark, etc. so take that as you may. Its still pretty impressive for Puma micro architecture and disappointing for Bulldozer micro architecture in my opinion. Imagine what Dual-Channel 1866/2133 Puma+ at extremely low TDP will be capable of!?

The HP X360 unfortunately comes with a TN display, not IPS unlike the Temash A6-1450 tablet detachable HP was selling prior. That's sad. I would've picked it up if it wasn't for the TN display. You would think in a product that is meant to be used as a tablet that it would come with an IPS display especially for the price. It does however have a solid build from what I heard so if you don't mind the display, its worth keeping.

It appears an m.2 ngff ssd will not be possible. Granted this isn't a true ssd it still detected it as an incompatible wwan device.

    Hello Folks,

The HP EliteBook 745 G2 caught my attention as a do it all laptop and I'm this close to pulling the trigger. Couple of questions:
    1. Do all 745 come with a WWAN Slot and pre-configured antennas irrespective of configuring a laptop or buying a pre-configured one?
    2. I plan on using purchasing an LTE WWAN Card for use with T-Mobile. Anyone know if it will work? Any recommendations? lt4111 or lt4112 ? Can I buy from EBay? If so, which ones are compatible? EDIT: I am not sure which Sierra Wireless Device because I don't know the form factor (ie. is it the airprime series em7355 or mc7355, its confusing because of not having purchased one ever before)
    3. I plan on removing the bgn card and inserting my Intel 6235. Would that work?
    4. I plan on removing the Mechanical HDD and replacing it with my Samsung 840 Pro 512GB drive. Will this work okay?

I should specify that I am leaning toward the 1600x900 $929 pre-configured laptop
    OR
if that won't jive, I will probably configure one based on OpenSuse or Freedos or whatever the cheapest option without windows.

    Thanks a bunch.

    regards,
