Hi,
I have just received a new 8760w from work to replace the 3 year old 8730w. I was pretty surpried to see that they had opted for the HD+ (1600x900) display rather than the FHD (652521-001)
What do ou think the chances are of being able to retro fit a FHD panel? Its going to drive me nuts otherwise, seems a real waste of 17.3", the HD+ screen really isn't good on this size, you can see the pixelation and banding
Thanks
Matt

If it's the former, then it should be a little cheaper to source and easier to find (ironically, I don't know the part number for the normal FHD panel but somebody here should be able to help you out, and if not you can always ask HP). Installation will simply involve opening up the display assembly from the top (taking off the sticky rubber domes on the display casing and unscrewing the display bracket, then pulling out the panel and swapping cables with the new panel and putting everything back together. There's minimal risk since the LCD parts are all covered up and you may not need to open up any other part of the unit unless the display cable from the panel goes directly to the motherboard, in which case you just need to pull up the keyboard.
If it's the Dreamcolor panel you want things are a little trickier and you need the panel, the colour mapping board and some special cables (the panel is LP173WF3-SLB2 I believe), there are usually people on Taobao selling the fully assembled display with all these parts for very cheap, at least for the 8740w, so if you know where to look, the cost should not be anywhere near as high as it would be to buy directly from HP ( >$1k to < $100). If you get the display fully assembled, it's very easy to replace the existing one, and if not, it won't be much more difficult than for the normal FHD screen.
I'd recommend going the DC route if you can, it's worth it.
Alternatively, you can always go directly to HP and pay them to source the parts and install it for ya.
