Thanks for that. What would be the best option in your opinion? I'm fine with taking things apart, but would it make more sense to swap the screen completely? Also, can you provide the part numbers? One other question, I seem to only get about an hour and 45 mins of battery, is this normal on the ATI model? If it is, i'll just buy an extended battery, or the battery for the 2nd slot.

As for part numbers: sorry, don't know. eBay is the best option, imo. You could also just get the display cover with the integrated webcam and all antennae/s.

Yes, unfortunately normal with the ATI gfx - too weak for real games (back in 2008/09), too demanding for battery runtime. The worst part though is the CCFL screen, which is responsible for about 1h less battery runtime vs. the LED version (which was already available for Dell E6400 and Lenovo T400 back then, even in WXGA+ size). To increase battery runtime on the HP 6930P, I'd do the following: 1. SSD instead of HDD, 2. LED (WXGA) screen instead of a CCFL screen (WXGA, WXGA+), 3. get the version with an integrated Intel (on board) gfx.

I can actually play games pretty decently on this. CS:S, TF2, Civ5 work well on this. I'm gonna get more batteries. Also, does the swap to LED require a mobo swap? I'll keep the ATI gpu. I'm running an SSD already.

Ahh okay. I think I'm gonna buy a more recent elitebook when I get my tax refund. Needs dedicated graphics or an Intel HD4000. I'm also open to a Dell E-Series. i-series proc would be great, but I need ddr3 ram so I can drop 8gb of ram in for cheap.

Save $30 on a new bezel.Locate center of webcam on bezel and drill hole with sharp pointed knife just slightly larger than cam lens.If you spend a lot of time in the rain, glue a small piece of cellophane to the inside of the bezel.Clean and replace double sided bezel tape to keep your rig "All Weather".Waterproof.

    Cheers!

    Hi there guys again,

I have a question but first i see no one replied to mikespears questions
From my experience of occasional laptop repair you'd better get whole display, not worth the hassle&potential screw-ups (assuming about the same prices on used)
Regarding battery on ATI it should last much longer in battery-saving mode conditions (like 3-4hours i guess, check specs)
But that's on a new one. I recommend ultra-capacity battery - if cost is acceptable for you - you can charge it independetly too

Do you have any experience in replacing these gelly thermal pads from gpu/chipset ? Anything like that below serves the purpose ?
Fujipoly Thermal Pad High Quality for Laptop GPU Shin Etsu Thermal Paste | eBay
today I just used thermap paste on everything, hope it will be fine. Not sure if i asked this question long ago, but this forum works so slow ;)

By the way watch out for the ZIF connector for the cable of the front button (wifi volume etc) - it broke easily on one side without a good duck tape that is a problem!

Looks like those gelly thermal pads are needed. From today I get artifacts and then screen gets messed totally when I launch a game and the gpu reaches about 50degrees celsius

edit: regarding the pads, looks like originals can be obtained only through cooling, processor and mobo replacement kits so way too expensive. So universals are available. But problem is no manual says about the default thickness for them. Same for HP support when I called them ;)

Anybody has a clue more or less what the thickness of the pads should be ?

Coming back to the topic: don't use thermal paste instead of the thermal pad !. My ATI graphics broke just after I got the thermal pad and was replacing it lol (no boot).
Got it replaced cheap by local service but with no warranty because to the guys experience these chips may not last long after replacement (can work just couple of days or months). So far it's about 2months with games and no problems for me.

Another thing you need guys to be aware with this model: HDD password set from bios on this model is linked with the mobo's TPM chip. You won't be able to use it with a different (at least older) HP or other laptop - the password will not work ! I tried on HP 6910p and nc6400
HP representative on the phone line in my country claimed it won't work at all unless its exactly same motherboard, but fortunately he was not right (I was able to enter& clear password on same 6930p model ). Anyways they don't warn you that you risk no access to your disk when you set the password without same laptop! Shame on them !! In my case it was couple days of unnecessary nerves & additional hassle with current work unavailable.

Now another thing: screen flickering issue. Unfortunately the same model I got as a replacement (before mine ATI was fixed) developed this and I've seen many people on the net saying it's the lcd cable. Did you encounter the LCD to be glued to the bezel or in other ways problematic to replace the cable ? Vids on YT suggest it shouldn't, I'll give it a try :)

The second piece I got also is older and it was true in some reviews that the battery is loose there ! I guess a proper thick piece of tape will fix this ;)
Will update the main thread post about those.

    Hi all,

I have bought this nice HP 6930p some months ago, second hand. I like it as I am coming from his small brother 6910p, so this one is some improvement.
First thing I did was to replace the keyboard for a new one, from my home country (Spain).
Then I removed all RAM and installed 4 Gb from Crucial. A few days ago I got 4Gb for a total 8 Gb RAM.
    It is running Win7 Ultimate SP1 x64.

Next step will be a new hard disk, larger than stock one. Perhaps I go for a Seagate Momentus XT hybrid 750 Gb.

The graphics card ATI Radeon HD3400 is running last Sw version with OpenGL v3.3

    Hi Martin,

Depends on the budget but if you didnt know there are sata adapters that fit the dvd drive (1 screw or without ;) and you can put a larger hdd for data there when system is installed on an real SSD in the standard slot.
The GL driver that you have on that geeks 3d app might be outdated. My catalyst 13.1 shows 6.14.10 as the GL driver (8.97.100... no. of the driver ) package

By the way when my 6930 developed a bad fault: the screen locks are actually locking it too hard ! I had to damage the case a bit to get it open  though the screen survived fortunately.
I'll probably remove those locks completely, not so essential ;]

    Hi Guys,

I knew about those HDD adapters for the DVD bay, but sometimes if I need something from a disc... I could´t do that, I mean, I´ll loss the DVD bay, isn´t it?
So, I am not sure about that option.
I think the Momentus XT Hybrid is performing good, at correct price and 750 Gb is a good size.
    But I´ll think about.

About the drivers... I´ll have a deeper look on it. I had to update the OpenGL drivers some time ago because they were obsolete and unable to run a graphics software with minimum OpenGL v2. So, now v3.3 it is good.

I use my laptop as main computer at home, attached to a 23inch HP monitor LA2306X, plus docking port, and I am happy this setup. Perhaps a DisplayPort would be great...

    Thank you

    Regards, Martin

You keep the dvd bay and swap them with the sata hdd when necessary (laptop off). So if you need to do that often it might be inconvenient, for me works great.

Don't know which docking hardware you are using but the older standard nc series station that I am using has a DVI out.

The drivers from HP are very old now, the "Catalyst Legacy" driver from AMD is probably the newest (at least official) available. This one I guess for you:
    Legacy

    Hi,

przemke, I double checked and the drivers installed are same version as the one from your link. Even I tried to install again and said "already installed and updated".

Indrek, about the HDD + SSD option sounds good as well. And you are right, I can connect an external DVD player when necessary (I already have one external DVD).
Do you have any link to a good DVD-bay adapter for 6930p?
The original DVD unit has the lid or cover curved, How is yours?

    Thank you

Yes it is curved, same as for the sata adapter. The one I have - I bought some cheap replacement on ebay not the original HP part. Same simple thing - works fine although the disk seems a bit loose in it (won't fall out inside anyway).

I´ll look for one of those caddies.
    Then, I´ll look for a 1Tb 7200 rpm disk.
    Any advice on the disk?

    Hello folks,

first of all: I am not a native speaking person... Please be patient with my grammar and typo... :)

    And now my question:

I am owning a 6930p for several years now and improved it over the years.
Since about one year i am owning 2 types of secondary batteries:

    # HP Spare: 367456-001 (???)
    # HP Spare: 405389-001 (HSTNN-OB24)

Both worked pretty well but died way to fast (round about 100 of 300 load cycles).

Now my question - i recognized, that windows / my 6930p unloads the secondary battery until 0% charging level and then uses the primary battery until round about 10%.
What i am trying to tell - my secondary battery is unloaded completely (not very healthy for notebook batteries and killing them) but my primary battery is treated like always.

Is there any way to configure the unload level of the secondary battery? Can I teach my 6930p NOT to kill every secondary battery within a few load cycles I will attach?

    Kind Regards

    /E:

    Additional Infos:

I checked an alternative OS (Xubuntu x64) - same behaviour - secondary battery is in use, until it is completely empty. So i can claim that it isn't the fault of any operating system... :/

    Ho all,
This forum is really full of resources for my old 6930p.
    Thanks for that.
I ma not a le to find a cheap motherboard with ATI 256megs on it.
The prices are so high that make me think if it's worth or not.
Plus, I want to change my LCD screen to a LED one, how can I do that (the cheapest and simplest way)?
    Thank you all.

    Hi,

I got that WXGA+ Display and yes - it uses CCFL. Trust me - you won't like this if you allready got an LED Display in use. The LED is so much brighter and the picture is much more clear... I really regret that I upgraded my 6930p to WXGA+ from that WXGA LED display I allready got. Nevertheless I sold my LED allready and now have to work with that CCFL Display...

Another negative point is, that my battery life has been reduced for about 1-2h... :(

It's not that hard to spot, if you know what to look for.

CCFL panel needs an inverter and a separate power cable for it.
LED panels do not have inverters, they get needed power via LCD cable.

    http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NjAwWDgwMA==/z/1QoAAOxyQfJTg2Ow/$_57.JPG
bottom of the display you see the white/ping power cable attached to the inverter board itself.

In the image you posted, the panel is a led one? So when I see the little cable I should assume is led? Or what?
Sorry but on ebay I find very confusing auctions.

The one I linked to? It was from the same ebay auction you linked to, and it's CCFL...

    Would this help?
What is Meant by the Terms CCFL (LCD) and LED?

    Hi all,

Well, finally I got a Seagate Momentus XT (ST750LX003) which is a hybrid drive.
Hopefully this weekend I´ll install it.

My intention is to use 4K sector size. Anyone knows if I need to set something in BIOS?
    Or just OS Win7 x64?

    Thanks

I'm here :) meaning I'm watching the thread but I cannot help you more than Indrek and others in the thread did already I'm afraid. I think it was described earlier in the thread what you need to convert to a LED screen, did u miss that ? or have additional questions ?
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/hp-elitebook-6930p-owners-lounge.709261/#post9091386

Since you bought the panel already you can dissasemble the screen and check for things. If you need the laptop on daily basis maybe you can attach some external screen for the "transition" period ;)

Be careful with the screen cover microlatches, especially when assembling back, I did crack some of them after replacing the lcd cable. Also make sure you screw tight the hinges to the metal pieces on the sides. I did something wrong and one of those later snapped making hinge not function and whole screen assembly got messed up. Had to buy parts and assemble again, unnecessary trouble...
Also as mentioned be careful with the small zif socket where you connect the touch buttons panel tends to break (the top plastic holder) and then its really irritating to deal with this (I have 2 more of 6930p and was messing with them too ;)

By the way removing the keyboard light diffusor works wonders (without dissasembling that one, just work with thin headed screwdriver)

Regarding this I'm using 2 ultra-capacity batteries but not using the too often. One of them dropped to like 50% capacity after not so many cycles. Well different conditions apply but also with the cells we could be more or less lucky
The other seems ok (but ouch just took a look at it and it was discharged completely for dunno how long :/)

Anyhow did you notice "secondary battery fast charge" setting in bios ? By default its on but for the cells condition I think its better to charge them slowly

Another note by the way: Recently I removed the screen latch parts from the base completely (those that you can remove) and you know what! They lock perfectly now! I also widened the aluminium holes a little bit to be extra sure but dunno if that helped, previous problem was it was locking too hard

Another note regarding screen brightness: to my experience it relies heavily on the inverter age/condition.
Replace with a new unused one and you might get much more brightness. Then there's not so much difference to rarely used LED screen from 8440p but thats just my opinion

Well actually I am a bit confused. I was thinking that the Led panel doesn't need an inverter but in the first post (the guide you mentioned) there is an inverter to use.
I really need to know for sure what I have to buy.

The guide mentions converter not an inverter! I am not familiar with the first but I guess its a different thing ie probably it converts the signal somehow to be compatible for the LED screen instead of CCFL one (just guessing :) and inverter is not needed

    Yes, my bad.
I need a converter board, a converter cable and a led cable.
I think I have found the converter cable, hope the seller will ship to me the exact version (image showed a 50.4V919 but the auction says 50.4V920).
What I really can't find is the converter board.
Can someone help me in this?

Spun mine off the desk today, picking up a bunch of cables, one being the mouse cable still attached.
Right off the desk Crash onto the computer room floor, landing on one of its corners Ouch !

Started up again right way, from Hibernate. Amazing !

Fortunate it was already shutdown perhaps and had already replaced the Disk with SSD.

Regularly carry it around on my arm but it's never had a serious fall before today.

Does the DVI port in the docking station include audio?

Just to make sure someone else doesn't do the same mistake.
I followed the guide on how to replace the panel of my HP, with a LED one.
    I followed your suggestions too.

Be aware that the items listed on the guide are correct only for a wxga+ panel!!!

I bought on Ebay a normal WXGA (1280x800) panel, an absolutely compatible B141EW05 V.5, but the connector on it is 30pin.

The converter cable on the guide is 40 pin so it is totally useless.... And so is my brand new panel and my project to replace it.

    No one mentioned it.
