If the laptop has that resolution on the display, does that automatically mean it's an IPS panel, or a Dreamcolor screen? Could it be neither of those and still have that resolution? Thanks.

BTW PC Wizard has the monitor manuf as: LP156WF1-TLF3 and product ID as: LGD0259

there are two FHD options for the 8540w:
15.6-inch diagonal 16:9 LED-backlit FHD anti-glare
(1920 x 1080 resolution)
15.6-inch diagonal 16:9 LED-backlit FHD anti-glare DreamColor
(1920 x 1080 resolution)
so just with the resolution you can´t say for sure.
But if I interpret this site correctly, it´s the normal screen, no IPS:

thanks for the info, but I thought all 1920x1080 screens on the 8540w were IPS

according to the HP Productbulletin: no.

When I ordered my 8540w with a Dreamcolor screen, HP mistakenly sent me the 1920x1080 non-Dreamcolor TN panel. Very nice screen, but not the Dreamcolor. They acknowledged the error and sent me a new machine with the Dreamcolor (plus an additional 10% discount on top of the 28% already received at order.)

How can you tell if the 8540w has the DC screen or not?

Load HWiNFO32 to your machine. Open the Monitor settings and it will show "LG Phillips: Unknown Monitor". But then looking at advanced parameters, it will show Color Bit Depth as "10 bits per Primary Color". The Dreamcolor II is the only 10 bit panel available on this machine.
By the way, HWiNFO32 is one of the best free system information tools out there and is updated regularly.
