Does anyone here have the HP 8740w with 1680x1050 screen?
I would like to know how good the screen is, maybe a video or screenshot.
Thanks
-
Agreed, any information on the quality of the 1680x1050 screen would be helpful.
-
Yes, info is awaited on this. There is an ati video card version with this screen in my country. That is the only one in my price range. I have an old 8510p which has 1680×1050 screen. That screen is not that great, but if the 8740w at least matches it, then it is ok for me.
At least I can say it will be ok for some games for a longer time then wuxga screen
-
Seems like no one has this, maybe I should just order it?
-
Somone else has or had this one in this forum. He must be inactive as I sent a private message some days ago to him, but I got no answer so far.
Yeah, you or I should buy it seemingly
Please report if you have it. -
I will see if new interesting models will be announced at CES in Las Vegas in a few weeks, if nothing comes up to suit my need I will order the 8740w with this screen, it's actually the only current notebook with a matte screen that I could find using this resolution.
-
go 1920*1200 on a 17"
just bought a 8540w with 1600*900 and i hate it (the screen ) for productivity ...the 8740w is heavy that's why and full hd on 15 " is a pain ....do you a favor and go 1920*1200 -
Full HD is too small for me, I don't have bad eyes, but 1680x1050 is really perfect for everything I do, this is the resolution I use at work, would be cool to have the same at home. I just need to move it around the house, so 17" is no problem, for portability I already have a netbook and an iPad.
-
I agree, with that resolution, 17 inch and a matte screen you have no choice (I think it is not complete matte like the other screens of the 8740w, but only a little reflective)
what you see on CES you won't get before May... -
Oh, 15" and 1680x1050 would be fine too, the only option I've seen is a Macbook, but I'm not ready for OSX yet.
-
15" and matte 1680x1050:
check out Lenovo IBM ThinkPad T500 or
MSI GT627N-8747W7P and MSI GT628NR-8747W7P
(but I know nothing about the quality
)
-
T500 is an older model, and the MSI are glossy.

I have the 8740w with the 1680x1050 screen and it is fantastic. It has excellent viewing angles. I can look on top, bottom, side to side, and the text is still as clear as when looking directly into the center. It really is a great screen. I will try and get some pictures tonight for those of you that are interested.
-
Yes, please post pictures. I'm intrested
Still thinking about buying one. I will be buying in the summer. If there is no great sandy bridge thinkpad or elitebook (15,4-15,6) until then matching its graphical power. My 8510p is getting really outdated now... -
Without further adieu, here are the pictures of the 1680x1050 screen from the Front, Side, and the Top. There is some glare on the Top view, but that's not the monitor. Must have been the chandelier behind me. I took these with a Canon 5D Mark II and this is the best I could get without using a flash. If anyone wants anymore pictures, let me know. As you can see, the screen is awesome. I don't know if it is an IPS panel or not, but it sure has the characteristics of one.
Thanks, and enjoy.
-
Very nice, thx.
-
Oh dear....that screen is beautiful! I sure am looking forward to mine showing up, hopefully by the end of next week.
-
As you can see, I was pleasantly surprised getting mine and seeing how lovely the screen is. I gave a bunch of T60's to my employees about 3 years ago, and they just ran out of warranty. I bought mine off of NewEgg and had mine in 24 hours. Stuck and SSD, 940xm, and 16GB of RAM for a lot less than HP was charging. I am not disappointed I didn't get the dreamscreen2.

What is your screen model? Is it a Samsung?
-
I don't know. What software do I need to tell me that?
-
Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
HWiNFO32 does a good job. I got a Samsung unit that is exclusive to HP I believe. -
You probably have the same one I do. What is your panel model?
-
Just got my 8740W with 1680X1050 screen.
Everest tells me:
Monitor ID SEC4C47
Manufacturer SAMSUNG
Model 170MT03-001
Manufacture Date 2008
Seems true to WozniakMacs pictures. Truely a beautiful screen.
Not much info on it on the net though. -

Yeah that is what I got. It is a HP exclusive by the looks. The equivalent Precision screen is at a 1440-wide resolution. -
May we see pics of the 1680x1050 screen, how are the viewing angles? A video showing the screen would be even better, thanks a lot.

WozniakMac has pictures of the screen on the previous page. It gives you a relatively good perspective on the viewing angles. -
Ops, thanks, yeah, it does look good.

If you want, if I am able to acquire my camera with HD video recording at some point, I can do a video of the screen I got. However, for the time being I won't be able to due to time and lack of resources in my current location.
It is overall a fantastic screen. The only thing that irks me with mine is that I have a dead sub-pixel and also I want more resolution space (1200p), however the latter is just my personal preferences. I am sure most of you will be content with the current resolution. It is still enough room to get things done in a 17" form factor. -
Thanks, I see that you have the Core i5-560M, that's the one I would consider too, how is the fan noise during idle and/or light web/office work? I prefer my laptops not to disturb me with noise from the fan.
Thanks -
Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
Its pretty quiet on idle really. I think my external hard drives make more noise spinning constantly than the fans do on idle. Now when on load, it does generate a bit of noise, but nothing close in terms of a jet engine. -
Can someone show the vertical viewing angles of this screen, how far can you pull back the screen before the colors changes? Thanks.
-
Is the 1680x1050 always with wide viewing angles?
-
Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
Every 8740w comes with a Wide Viewing Angle panel feature. From the stock 1050p to the DreamColor 2. -
I'm not sure how to make an objective measurement of the angles... I can say this: If you are used to IPS screens and are really fussy, you might not be happy with it. But compared to the cr*ptastic TN screens they put on consumer machines these days, it is pretty good. I would rate it similarly to the screens they put on Macbook Pros. Left-to-right viewing angles are excellent. 'Above' angles are good, 'below' angles are fair IMO. I find that the colors change less than does the brightness, unlike the typical awful TN panel with their brightness AND color-inversion problems. I am used to using good IPS screens on my desktops, and I would say I am 'satisfied' (not 'ecstatic') with the quality.
This is for the 1680x1050 screen... I believe there is a 1920x1200 TN screen available also. -

Yes and that one is also used on the Dell Precision M6500 non RGB+ (The WUXGA+ I mean). -
So, does anyone NOT have the Samsung panel? I just ordered a refurb with this res, and I'm curious to know what kind of "panel lottery" I might be in for. I would love to have the one shown in WozniacMac's pics.
Can't wait. -
Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
So far it looks like it is all Samsung. However, if you discover you are the first without, do tell! -
This screen must actually be unique, since no other 17" matte screen in the market today has a resolution of 1680x1050.
-
I mainly got the 1680x1050 resolution screen because I play games as well and games would run smoother on this resolution.
-
I think this is the only 8740w model with this screen, so I would like to ask another question from the owners.
Does it have an internal hsdpa (3g) modem? If not is there a place for it, can I upgrade with a hp hsdpa modem (does it have its place, the antennas inside etc.).
This would be important to me, and in my country there are no showcase units where I can check (too pricey for us). And I dont trust hp hompage info...
Thx. -
There is a place for an internal HSDPA modem. The antennas are already there on mine.
-
Thx, that is good news.
-
yep, you need the UN2420 broadband model. The UN2400 just craps out in HP connection manager. probably due to a bios whitelist.
-
Thx, I will remember that.
-
Just to follow up, I got my laptop and it is indeed another Samsung. Excellent monitor for a TN panel, but I have to say, the color is a little less than I'd hoped. Anyone know of a way to raise the amount of color? I don't see any color-specific setting in the ATi control panel.
-
Best option is to buy a display calibrator, I have this one, and it really makes the colors pop:
Datacolor - Global Leader in Color Management Solutions
Not cheap, but worth every penny... -
I've been thinking about getting a calibrator for a while, and that looks like it's a good one. 180~ on Amazon, too. I'll probably pick it up in the coming months.
That being said, I found a saturation control in the ATi CCC, so I'm in pretty good shape now after some careful fine-tuning. I'm sure calibration would (will) be better, but at least I'm not using a washed-out display now.
Absolutely loving this laptop. Looking forward to reformatting with my incoming Hitatchi drive and 8GB of memory, then installing CS4, games, and running some benchmarks. Then I have to think about a dock...

I was fortunate my screen never came with washed-out colors. I naturally got a warm-tint pre-loaded, which I actually prefer to have my screen showing. -
For the record, I don't think mine is actually washed-out so much as I'm horribly spoiled by my Panasonic IPS TV connected to my desktop PC at home. The color on that screen just killed the HP (as, of course, should be the case), and I was looking for a way to raise the saturation to reduce the parity between the two as much as is reasonable. Of course, I end up with some slight oversaturation as a result, but I won't be doing color-critical work on this anyway.
What do you mean by "have my screen showing"? -
Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
What I meant that the screen displays a warmer-color tint and that I prefer a warmer-color tint.
I can see why you wanted to oversaturate the colors on your screen. Coming from IPS you do get spoiled by how vibrant they are!
