I have a weird screen issue that popped up last night.
I opened the screen up (it's been connected to my docking station for a few weeks, not used elsewhere), and noticed a big black circle, about 3/8" diameter. the circle faded away, as though it were produced by heat (I've charged my solar powered watch with an incandescent bulb enough times to see an LCD go black from overheating) There was nothing warm on the keyboard, but the LCD lid was warm/hot in that particular spot. In addition, I had 2 vertical 2" bars on each side, and the screen was shaking. It did not output this to my 24" LCD, and it stayed there after a full shut down, and within Linux.
I put in a service request to have the LCD replaced, and hope to get a call today.
Today, I woke up, and the issue is gone. I don't know what happened, but I left it on with the lid closed, plugged into the dock, so I could show the HP tech what the problem was.

As for the slowness... I hope it's not the ProtectTools 'cause I like em. At least it's not annoying to the point of not using the notebook. I probably only use it a few hours a week anyway. -
It takes around 25 - 30 sec to get to log in screen and another 15 sec to load my programs on started (until the CPU utilisation drops). Actually can start other application directly after log in.
Now I find i7 is far more than enough, should have consider using i5 for better battery life. -
Bluetooth hacks, anyone?
I use BT for several things: mouse and/or headset. It's nice that my 8440p comes with BT built in.
There are two-things though: first is the range which could be improved (because I've tried several devices, I conclude it is the radio in the 8440p) because right now I get 10ft reliable, 15 feet usually and 20ft off and on. Is this BT device a mini-PCIe that can be modified with an antenna (using one of the two wifi antennae for BT)?
The other thing, since I'm using Windows 7 with a BT headset for audio, I have not yet found a way for it to auto-connect (after successful pairing). My mouse automatically re-connects. But for the headset, i always have to open a "control window" click connect, and leave that window open or minimized. Any solutions? -
While I'm at it...
Does anyone have any images of the 8440p opened up (even partially)? -
does anybody have any suggestions for a quality replacement
cheers -
I am just about to install a new intel ssd (X25-M 160GB) in my 8440p
any tips or help or install instructions would be appreciated
many thanks -
Mine comes together with the X25-M 160GB. I guess you can install the SSD and recover Windows.
Remember to disable defrag and enable Trim -
One cannot "enable" TRIM, you can only confirm that it is enabled by W7.
1. Using the Start Menu Search Box, Search CMD;
2. Right click the Cmd Program and select Run as Administrator;
3. In the command line type “fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify”
If DisableDeleteNotify=0 TRIM is Enabled.
If DisableDeleteNotify=1 TRIM is Disabled.
From http://thessdreview.com/optimization-guides/the-ssd-optimization-guide-2/
If TRIM is not enabled, it usually means you need to update the SSD firmware. -
I'll try answer my own question. I took the HP apart: keyboard out, memory cover and wireless covers off. Nothing. Then I found this HP video
and it turns out that the Bluetooth module is under my right palm, facing me, next to the right speaker, with a single screw holding it in.
Turns out, the range of bluetooth suffers if my hand is covering it up. Makes sense. -
Hi all,
Just to let you know the paint goes off from my Hp EliteBook 8440p where I keep my hand.
This should never happen to a 6 months old computer!
I'll contact HP after the holidays and see if they can do anything about it.
Cheers,
za-k/ -
this problem you have with all painted surfaces, mine looks not so good, too
(8730w). I bet HP says it is normal wearout
yes, it is poor design, older HPs were better -

Does anybody know where I can download HP Software Setup at? I can't find it on HP's driver page and can't seem to find it anywhere else online. The software is kinda like "Windows Update" but it downloads HP drivers and stuff automatically.
-
Do you mean HP Softpaq Download Manager?

Hello guys,
does anybody know, how to reset fingerprint sensor? I have reinstalled Windows and registered new fingerprints but if I want to go to BIOS there is still saved my old profile with old fingerprints. -
Hi,
I'm buying 8440p's as the work-horse laptop for our mobile team (of course I get to evaluate and use it until we move to the next generation). I'm getting good feedback from the users - though there were some aspects of the previous model (6930p) I was buying that were preferable.
[As the work we do doesn't require high graphics performance I couldn't justify the 8440w to myself- though if I was using my own money to buy for personal use then I would probably opt for the W.]
I experience screen flicker when the ambient light sensor is enabled (never a problem on the 6930p). I saw a post that suggested a newer BIOS version may fix it. After the BIOS upgrade (from F.0F to F.11) I reran the Windows 7 (32-bit) performance assessment and the graphics subscore dropped from 4.3 to 4.1.
Does anyone know is this was a direct result of the BIOS upgrade or does Windows Aero degrade after install? (I'll grab the next 8440p with the older BIOS I find and do some comparative testing if I get the time.)
Anyway the BIOS upgrade didn't fix the screen flicker but it did fix:
- WLAN problem where it would loose visibility of *all* WLAN networks after resuming from a power-save state (the only way to recover was a full reboot)
- DisplayPort extended-desktop second display would not recover after screen-saver/power-save (this problem could not be reproduced with VGA interface)
[- the on-screen volume indication seems more responsive]
I like the MultiBoot function (need to play with it a bit more to see what I can get it to do e.g. personal versus business mode - the built-in Linux is a nice touch).
I still can't get the Validity biometric fingerprint reader to work *without* HP ProtectTools (the 6930p reader had native Windows 7 support). I'll keep watching this forum to see if anyone gets a solution.
The battery doesn't last particularly well when doing something graphics intensive (and it gets a bit hot in the process - even more so when plugged in).
The first 8440p I got developed a fine crack in the black plastic screen-surround at the bottom left on the outside of the hinge. At the time when I called it in for a fix it was effectively only a cosmetic problem - the construction of the hinges is good.
Time will tell whether our mobile team find the 8440p as rugged as the 6930p - but I'm certainly not getting complaints at the moment.
[Back-lit keyboard would be good as the top light is only OK if I peer hard to find something I can't do by touch.]

Does anyone know if there's any difference in the heatsinks between the Core i7 620 and the i7 720?
I'm thinking about bumping my 8440W to a quad for more VMware work. -
I'm ready to buy an Elitebook 8440p in the UK, but can't quite bring myself to do it at the moment, does anyone have any idea when there might be a Sandy Bridge refresh?
-
I'm wondering this too. Changing jobs and need a new laptop and I'm very happy with my 8440p and can't really find any other HP model better. But maybe worth to wait a little for an update or maybe a replacement model?
BTW, this might be useful for others. I did some testing on how much longer a boot took when you installed all the drivers&software HP recommends. Made my 8440p much quicker.
What drivers and software are important to install on a HP 8440p EliteBook? | Sysadmin Lab -
Ahbeyvuhgehduh Lost in contemplation....
Just purchased one of these for one of the folks in the office - am looking forward to seeing how well it will do.

Hopefully HP will update 8440p with Sandy Bridge CPUs and option of having backlid keyboard or any other goodies sometime in February, so i can purchase one with out having any back thoughts =]

8440w battery life:
Got the laptop a few week ago (i7-640m, 8gb ram, intel ssd and 500 hdd). Just did a JFK-SFO flight. Even though United's PS service has power outlets, I wanted to see what the battery could do. I used it as soon as it was allowed and turned it off when they told us to on landing. Used wifi via gogo the entire time and watched a 1 hr hd mkv file. Ambient light sensor on and brightness about 50%. The laptop still had 20 mins to go on shutdown. That works out to a little over 5 hours of constant use. -

Can / do I need to make alterations to my graphics card to also output audio ??
if yes, can somebody explain how to do this
cheers guys -
For me, I had to redo my NVidia Display drivers.
As you install the display drivers (some 257MB download) the installer will have two check boxes. One of those boxes says HD audio. Install that component. (leaving the other one unchecked did not uninstall my working display - so leave that unchecked)
I think that's all that's needed to send audio up the HDMI (DisplayPort) connector. -

One reviewer, Bdbuhr, in this thread (page 6) was able to get the HDMI/DisplayPort audio to work.

Does anybody know if 8440p supports SATA 6?
-
NecessaryEvil Notebook Evangelist
It doesn't do SATA6; DisplayPort will do audio out on my 8540W, as I'm having it send sound to my Dell U2410, which is outputting it to the speakerbar (power and audio jacks plugged into the U2410)
-
ie..... in nvidia control panel output to TV is classed as DVI not HDMI
which causes problems accessing the audio on off control -
This 8440P has the Intel graphics (driver 8.15.10.2202) which has no support for DisplayPort/HDMI audio.
The audio is IDT HD sound which is currently showing my "Digital Audio (HDMI) - is now unplugged".
My TV is a Sony Bravia and the family is currently watching it so I will need to wait to test it fully.
I've just plugged the HDMI into the DisplayPort and the graphics driver has recognised that it is connected. The audio driver is still showing the HDMI as disconnected.
I've also just noticed that the audio driver rekons I've got 3.5mm jack sockets on the rear (which don't exist) - will dig into the audio driver further to see if there is a better match for the 8440p.
[Update - I've not been able to make it work but I've just realised I'm using a DisplayPort to DVI cable connected to a DVI to HDMI cable! I'll get a direct DisplayPort to HDMI cable sometime and will test again. For now I have a 3.5mm audio connector in the headphone socket.] -
MMMMmmm thought i was using nVidia software drivers etc ??
anyway just noticed that nVidia also do not support PHILLIPS HDTV in any way shape of form due to compatability issues ??
My TV is a PHILLIPS....... AAggHHHH :-(
Me thinks I will never get my displayport to HDMI to pass audio -
are you sure the GPU does the sound?
because on my elitebook, the soundcard passes the sound to the HDMI port, not the gpu driver. check on the volume control button. right click on the speaker by the clock, then 'playback devices' do you see a HDMI Out option in the list that comes up?
If it is there, then set that to default by right clicking it and 'set as default' and you should have sound.
just a theory!Attached Files:

hi Siorah
thanks for your help
sadly its not there
just speakers / HP IDT high definition audio &
Headphones (RTC) IDT high definition audio -
hiya copper,
I am afraid for some reason the nvidia driver is definately at fault. - strangely i can drive my LG TV downstairs fine with the driver i'm on - 266.58, on a displayport to HDMI active connector.
It's quiet, but its there.
the only thing i'm different on is i'm running server 2008 R2 with service pack 1, which could be the thing. I'll do some more research for you.
The recommended driver is around the 189 range for it still 'working' apparently. have you found a driver with that version to test?
ok
Some of the official (NVidia) drivers to play with
These ALL support the NVS 3100M -
This one definately has a HD audio driver:
NVIDIA DRIVERS 197.16 WHQL 64 bit
NVIDIA DRIVERS 197.16 WHQL 32 bit
(One that still works with HD audio)
NVIDIA DRIVERS 257.21 WHQL 64 Bit
NVIDIA DRIVERS 257.21 WHQL 32 Bit
(This one apparently works - unless you have a philips or panasonic TV)
NVIDIA DRIVERS 266.58 WHQL 64 bit
NVIDIA DRIVERS 266.58 WHQL 32 bit
This is the latest driver. This one *does* work on a Philips TV, as i've just been round someones house to test it.
The audio is quiet though, i had to turn the tv up quite a bit before i heard it.
hope this helps -
Hi everyone,
I'm having some trouble getting the EliteBook 8440p to properly hibernate using Windows XP 32bit. Yes, I know Windows 7 is out there and all, but we're bound by corporate guidelines. You don't change 100.000 seats on a whim
Anyway, we're currently testing the 8440p as a replacement default laptop to our current model and we've run into a really annoying issue. The laptop would simply freeze when one would try to hibernate the machine. After a short "Windows is preparing to hibernate" the display goes black, all the lights stay on and it just sits there, doing nothing. It's not responding to pings to the internal network cards (wired and/or wireless) either so I would think it's dead. The only way to get it back running is to force it to shut down by pressing the power button for more than 4 seconds.
"Theres something interfering with the software!" you might think ... well, i've taken a clean Windows XP 32bit SP3 installation from a Microsoft VL ISO and installed it on the laptop. To get something like Hibernate or Stand-by to work, you need to have the video drivers installed, which we did (SP51234.exe, version 6.14.10.5303). This was the only thing that was installed, after WXP32 SP3. We then tried to hibernate, same story.
We have the following configuration (really nothing special and a typical office laptop configuration):
HP EB 8440p
Intel Core i5 520M
4GB ram
Intel HD Graphics
BIOS version is 68CCU Ver. F11
Video BIOS version is Intel 1994
Has anyone run into anything like this before? Are there things we need to install before hibernate works properly? Did we miss anything in our test? As a reminder, installing another OS might probably solve the issue but this is not what we're looking for currently
We've also contact HP Engineering team in the US to have a look at it but I was really wondering what the user community has to say about this. -
Update the BIOS, I believe that will fix the hibernation problem.
-
UPDATE:
Found out that installing the graphics card drivers from a version earlier than the latest solved the hibernation issue. Same goes for the 2540p and 2740p and probably a lot of other Intel HD Graphics using laptops. -
NVIDIA DRIVERS 266.58 WHQL 64 bit
installed the above on my 8440p and Pillips HDTV without success
tried this one
NVIDIA DRIVERS 257.21 WHQL 64 Bit
no good either
think this is a lost cause untill NVIDIA produce a driver compatable with PHILLIPS HDTVs
from what I have read this isnt going to happen :-(
unless anybody tells me different
cheers for the help guys, appreciated -
did you try the 197.16 drivers?
-
no didnt try that driver, came to a conclusion that there is a prob with the compatability with the phillips HDTV
will just run sound through my laptop speakers instead
moving on to the next problem I have
HP UN2420 3G/HSPA WWAN MINI CARD MODULE
FOR HP/COMPAQ LAPTOPS
HP P/N: 531993-001
Model: Qualcomm GOBI-2000
I installed the hardware and software and updated the software to the latest version
all worked ok
only use the mobile broadband very infrequently and i tried it again a few days ago without success ???
HP wireless assistant says WWAN DISABLED ??
in the device manager / network adapters it shows a microsoft virtual wifi minport adapter but nothing mentioning my HP UN2420 3G/HSPA WWAN MINI CARD MODULE ??
in other devices I do have an UNKNOWN DEVICE THOUGH and windows cannot install the software for this item successfully
In the bois the WWAN is switched on
Within my vodafone connection software it also says WWAN DISABLED
cannot for the life of me find a way to ENABLE THE MODULE ??
any help really appreciated
thanks -
