I swapped the video card in my 8530w (FX 770M) with one from 8530p (Radeon HD 3650). The laptop shuts down after POST, about 5 sec after turning on.
Is this because of the whitelist? Has anyone else encountered this problem?

do not think so, the whitelist procedure gives "device not supported" message, or the like,

but notice, the notebook with nvidia or ati behaves differently in various actions, for example while connecting a hdmi device

Update: I replaced the motherboard too with one from 8530p and I had the same issue. After further inspection it seems that this was due to a small height difference between the GPU chip on these two cards. The Radon GPU is only-so-slightly lower and it was not making contact with the heatsink. I replaced the thermal pads from from the memory chips with thermal paste and the heatsink sits properly on the GPU now. The system boots fine.

Although I am now running on a 8530p motherboard (I'm keeping it because the 8530w has the unmoddable F.20 BIOS), I'm pretty sure it would work just as well on the 8530w as they're basically the same, and using the same BIOS.

If only the modded BIOS would also remove the GPU whitelist, I could get a decent Radeon... :)

As you can see from the description, Radeon 3650 only has 256MB dedicated video RAM. It supports Hypermemory, meaning it can use some of the computer's RAM as video memory, but this more of a marketing gimmick. This also leads to confusion and some people report it to have more than 256 MB RAM.

Furthermore, the video video card needs to be from HP, otherwise it won't pass HP's ****ty whitelist. There's no modded BIOS that removes the withelist for the GPU as of yet; it may be because the video BIOS is embedded in the system BIOS.

is it not charging fast enough? if charge is ok, i'd stick with it. if you need multiple adapters, I'd get the 120W .

I wouldn't worry about it unless it takes a day to charge from low to full battery.

120W is needed for a docking station, 150W for an advanced docking station

    I use 90W

Problem with express card to USB 3.0

When in the computer slot works fine,
but when in advanced docking station slot
the speed decreases to USB 2.0

    Hi all,
This is my first post here on NBR. I am the recent new owner of a 8530p which I bought on eBay. At first I was excited about getting a former high end laptop for cheap, but I discovered that the unit is too loud. Upon warming up, the GPU goes from mid forties to 60-63C at idle. When the GPU reaches 54-56C things get too loud.

What I am looking for is a guide how to install fresh thermal paste to the heatsink. So far I know that there are a couple screws on the bottom with keyboard icons indicating that they are holding the keyboard in. I undid them but the keyboard remains firmly attached.

I looked at a YouTube video but the guy is hell-bent on disassembling the whole goddam thing (not what I want) and it's hard to tell exactly what he's doing. I am reading through this thread as well as I am able to for info on noise and fan issues but it is a long read : /

    Merry Christmas!

Between ESC and F1, F4 and F5, F8 and F9, F12 and numlock, there are those small tabs. Move them down a little bit, you will probably feel a click. When all 4 are down and all screws are taken out from the bottom, the top end of the keyboard should just rise up and you can lift it up. Carefully, the cable is not too long and you need to detach it too :)

Awesome! I'm looking forward to trying this out. Do you have any info on how easy it is to update the TP on this machine?

I owned previous model, 8510w and if I remember correctly the heatsink was completely removable after keyboard was taken out, so it was really easy. I would guess difference to 30 series is not that big, but I've never had my hands on one.

All went smoothly :) KLF, as you said the heatsink and fan were easy to remove once the keyboard was out.

I put ceramic TP on all contact points, netting a 5-10C GPU temp decrease. The CPU temp seems to have gone down only minimally. It would probably be worthwile to remove the 'sink and do some detective work on how the contact is but I was a little afraid that I was going to crack a die... so I might just quit while I'm ahead. The 8530p is still too loud to be a good user. The fan is made by Delta...

It's kind of funny, I remember my laptop from this era - a cheap Toshiba Core 2 - and it had the same problem that this high end one does: youtube will make the fan loud.

Incidentally, the machine will boot with the fan header disconnected so I just might try to knock together a homebrew cooling stand using some fans and plywood.

in fact you can hear the sound of air under high load, if you hear any other sounds that replace the fan.

In these notebooks from time to time you have to blow the radiator. This can be done without dismantling. Simply walking the fan is blown from the outside, and then the fan blows the dust out.

Use rmclock to undervolt it. My wife's 8530p could go down from 1.25 iirc to 1.0v stabile for highest multy, which killed off at least 5-10c.

I definitely noticed a huge gob of stuff when I removed the fan. I think the fan is actually in pretty good condition though. There was no way to lubricate the bearing. I have a Gentle Typhoon taped to a DVD spindle cover which is taped to the vent now. It's quieter to listen to than the stock fan.

I might try to install Windows 7 and do the undervolt thing. I'm a little vexed by this whole ISOs no longer provided by Microsoft thing. Do I reaaally want to install a root-kit? ;) Manjaro Linux is in the house.

Do not understand the Gentle Typhoon trick.

Up to 50% processor loud the air sound is comparable to the HDD noise. Thermal grease changed two years ago together with the main board - the grease coming with the main board, do not know its quality.

If I understand correctly you are saying that at half-load the fan noise is about the same volume as the HDD sound. That's pretty quiet.

What are your temps? With my modified cooling setup at the moment mine are about : gpu~51 ; cpu~33 . With the stock fan it was gpu-61 ; cpu 35. They vary a fair bit.

    Hi guys,
i found this forum over google, and i hope anyone can give me some tips...

I have 8530p over 3 years, its amazing notebook, i can play AioN or Blade and Soul, Borderlands 2, .... there without any issues (upgraded to SSD drive, 4GB ram),,

Years ago, when used Windows 7, everything works fine, some time later, i upgraded to 8.1 and my fingerprint reader work weird, on 10 is not functional completely..

BUT, now.. i have reverted back into legal W7 Ultimate x64, SP1.. and i am just unable to use fingerprint sensor, in device manager this device is not present (no exclamation, but also device is not present in "sucessfully" installed devices), and now, when i look into bios, there is no fingerprint toggle around ambient light sensor.. so i am confused.. Anyone face same problem? Is there any posibility of "move" cable inside and disconnected reader? if yes, anyone know where exactly and how its connected to MB? (i tryed install driver manually, also HP security management... still no result)

Second problem is about eSata connector, i have never used this feature, now i get AKASA eSata cable (its just adapter with 2 cables, one is USB for power and second is eSata), i have installed all drivers (no exclamations) but disc is not work.. when use pure USB adapter, it became detected immediately, but when i connect eSata, nothing happened.. I tryed disc management in windows, refresh.. nothing happened.. eSata is ENABLED in bios, AHCI also, when i connect this disc to switched OFF computer, and turn it on, it start loading windows, and just hang at "Starting windows" screen for ever (5 seconds after when i disconnect eSata device, windows start normaly).. any idea?

Thank you for any potentional informations, and sorry for my poor english... Its not mine native language.

for both problems.. there is my bios settings dumped with BIOS configuration utility.. as you see, eSata and AHCI is enabled, and fingerprint sensor is simply not present in settings.. ?...

    Code:

    have never used fingerprint reader,
    but use esata permanently,

as far as I know this is the last HP laptop with esata booting enabled, instead of a mess of OSes on internal drive I simply connect one of old 3,5 drives with appropriate OS in desired configuration, so my old drivers did not go to the trash can

it seems that your systems hungs up on devices (typical in the case of erratic usb device connected )

I use RAID in the configuration,
and external power supply for a disk,

    try an external supply first.

tried also RAID settings, my OS unable to boot with that :/ (also drive is not visible in RAID drives list when laptop rebooting :/)

the drive should be visible on raid list on the boot time,

something is wrong with comp or the drive,

I remember that few old ide drives did not work , however have not seen a sata drive which did not work,

hope, you have enabled esata in BIOS,

and by the way, for win XP you must get raid driver from intel pages

in win 7 should set registry key

raid controler sees ide drives connected by IDE-SATA translation cable to eSATA port, but not all, few old (small) drives are not visible on the list and do not work

    Its sata drive, no ide.

It must be just broken esata connector, as my hdmi. I never used my hdmi, a when tryed connect laptop to my tv via hdmi, it works but only sometimes, when you move with laptop by centimeter, it lose connection.

    could be more,

    even voltage,

in one of my 8530 I have "burnt" hdmi ,
it worked through 10 m cable,
now works only through 2 m hdmi cable

and only low consumption USB HD are working - due to voltage drop on USB connectors under load

note: even while using 150W power supply from docking station

I have 120W ps, and im not powering disc from usb on computer, but from externali power source. Its just dead... But no matter, i have external usb boxes for 2,5" sata disc, so i will keep switching them.. Slower data rate, but work...

I have an 8530w with an old 80gb Intel X-25 and would like to upgrade to another larger SSD as I've run out of space.
    I've been thinking of 256 or 480/500 Gb SSD's.
Before I do anything I wanted to check with other folks who have done this, if there is any limitation from the bios or other incompatibility. I did encounter some posts while searching that the bios may be capping the SSD capacity to less than 120gb but is this true? I cannot find a certain answer. My bios version if F.20
    Anyone running a large SSD?

    Many thanks in advance,

    i dont think...

for inside electronic is no difference between SSD and normal HDD.. every "ssd specific" operation did ssd firmware inside it.. so.. i dont think there will be limitation like this.. i have 8530p and using 240GB SSD there without problem.. before used 750GB normal HDD there..
after SSD upgrade, i give up bluray mechanic, and replace it with upgradebay hdd storage.. so i have 240GB ssd for system and most used games :D and 750GB D: drive just for data.. benefit of this upgrade bay solution is speed, it copying between SSD and this upgrade bay HDD over 100MB/s

one more question to the folks here:

The little keyboard LED light, does not seem to close all the way in. I recently replaced it and the new one does the same.
It has a spring-loaded clip inside that keeps it tensioned. Its very annoying since it doesn't close flush with the display bezel and lights all the time.
Any experience on how to fix or make it close properly again?

btw in case anyone is interested for future ref. 480gb SSD went in fine.

safeboot is enabled via one of the hp protectools apps, possibly disk encryption. does anyone know of a program that can clone the hard drive with this enabled? I haven't had any luck. I don't really want to disable it as I'm not sure what all that would affect.
