After an exhaustive research and numerous comparisons with the new Dell XPS I have now placed my order for a Elitebook 8540W with Dreamcolor. I went cheap on the ram, storage, and graphics card to pay for the best possible processor and the Ultra expensive display. I will post pics as soon as I receive my toy. I could have gotten a similarly spec'd Dell for about $1000 less but it does not ship with a Dreamcolor IPS panel.

    Here are the specs:
    840qm
    ATI Firepro
    Dreamcolor
    2 gb ram
    250 gb HDD

I think the Elitebook has a better chance of lasting 3-4 years while you're in grad school compare to the envy.

    Hi everyone
I'm currently considering buying a notebook for school and one of them is the Elitebook 8540p. The other two are the Probook 6550b and Dell XPS 15.
I had a few questions concerning the multitouch on the Elitebook (I guess Probook should be similar).
I know two-finger scrolling and pinch zoom is possible but I would like to know if there's an option for tapping.
For example: 1 finger = left click, 2 finger = right click, 3 finger = middle click
My sister's 4 year old MSI has this and I find it extremely useful.

Did you shave your finger prints off? :p

Kidding aside, did you d/l and install a program called "HP ProtectTools Security Manager"? I don't believe I found that, or the Webcam software installed and had to do it myself.

Then "where" one registers their finger prints under that software is under the "Credentials" object. Just click on a finger and scan it a few times.

(I wonder if one can enable/disable the finger-print scanner in Bios? Wondering now if perhaps you need to enable it in Bios? There's even an option where you have to scan your finger before the OS will even boot, in which case you don't get prompted with the login screen, which is what I use to boot)

My LCD screen has a very red tint & almost like circles around the screen. My guess is that it's a loss connection but I cannot find anywhere online how to take my laptop apart. Does anyone has any ideas? Take a look at the attached screenshot.

    Hi on3eighteen,
Are you sure that its not a driver thing? :p
In the photo you posted I can see that not all the colors are affected! just the background so it might be a resolution problem ;)

I thought it might be the driver but the red tint is there when it boots up & shows the BIOS & I thought that meant it was probably more than a driver. Plus, my company just installed Win 7 on it & shipped it out the same day so I know the screen was good not so long ago. My thought is that either it got damaged in shipping or broke somehow. I cannot find any videos/posts on how to re-seed the LCD cable.

    Try this...
    1) Upon boot, hit ESC when you see the banner stating so to load the boot options
    2) Select the Bio settings
    3) Select System configuration
    4) Select Built-in devices

    Is your Fingerprint scanner checked?

You might want to check all the options under there, and all the settings above the Built-in devices too, if you haven't already configured your Bios to your desired settings.

Seems to me the thing should be ready out of the box, but i have seen a few posts saying it doesnt work with 64bit machines

It’s my first post on this forum, so be gentle :) .

This is an amazing forum, with plenty of information! Thank you guys!

I was reading this thread and also other threads (Dell Precision, Dell XPS, Sony F-Series owners) for quite a while, in order to find a notebook which suits my needs (quality-, reliability- and user experience-wise). After going through a disappointing experience with the Sony F12, my focus is now on buying the EliteBook 8540w with the DreamColor2 display.

I called HP France to get a quotation, but it turned out that the DreamColor2 display is not available yet in France, nor in Europe (contrary to what is stated since quite a while on the HP France site). Did anyone bought or at least ordered the EliteBook 8540w with the DreamColor2 display in Europe ?

    Hi there, again.

A few days ago I asked for this very answer and had it. And I also said here that i have a dual core cpu (i7 - 620m) and for some reasons I actually can't say why now, I stated that if I only have 2 ram Slots and my computer got 4 gigas of ram, then necessarly it is 2x2 gigas of ram...

Actually I have no proof of that... So do you clever guys know? If i have 4 gigs of ram, isn't it possible I simply have one and only ram barrete of 4 gigas ? Can I see it under the Peripherals in Windows and is the info reliable?

And yes I ask that because I'm afraid to open my laptop just to see that :p Really don't want to do that for this only reason.

Can you guys help me please? Thanks a lot.

    Hi guyz i just receive my 8540w ...with an i5 560m ....

I done a wprime ad the results are around 19.2sec ....while on notebookcheck it sticks around 17.5

    Tested a dell precision first and was having 17.9-18.2sec on a i7 640m !!

So why those results are far from what it should be ? (power scheme set to full perf , not bootware running , no antivirus , ...imean nothing troubling cpu ...dpc latency always under 300us)

    thks ...

wPrime takes 17.489s on my i5-560M. Are you using v1.55 of wPrime? Also, you have it set to 4 threads?

Yours sounds normal to me. There could be something running in the background slowing everything down a bit; nothing to worry about.

There are other versions of wPrime, but v1.55 is the version you should use for comparing to others.
Your results seem normal to me.

I believe they are the same thing, actually just different names for DDR3-1333. The PC3 # denotes the peak transfer rate and whether 10600 or 10666 is used is more a marketing thing. The CAS latency #s are more important and should be matched across all memory sticks in your machine for best results.

    Do you think 19.3 sec in wrpime 2.03 is normal ? for a 2.66 4 threads ?

I don't use wPrime 2.03; only v1.55 because like I said, that's the only version used for comparison purposes.

There's nothing wrong with your times. The times will vary system to system even if the parts are the same due to the software configuration. 19.3s is normal; please don't make a big issue out of nothing. :)

    Hello,
I'm the proud owner of a new Elitebook 8540p. The notebook is very nice, the HD+ screen is gorgeous and performance wise it's exactly what i wanted. I have the i5 560m and Nvidia nvs 5100, 4 gb of ram and 500GB 5400rpm seagate hdd (planing an upgrade to 500gb 7200 rpm model). The notebook is quite cool to the touch, palm rest never gets anything but comfortably warm and the bottom is a bit warmer but ok for lap use. I swapped out the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU with AC MX-4 and got a 5 degree centigrade drop in temperatures...HP did quite a messy job in assembling the cooling system, putting in to much thermal paste.
The flowing image shows the temps with the laptop on my lap at about 26 oC ambient after about 8 minutes of Intel Burn Test combined with 6.5 minutes of FurMark. I know i should have done a longer test but the temperatures showed to bee quite stable, reaching the maximum values after about 2-3 minutes. The Nvidia nvs 5100m was over-clocked from 550 core/1215 sader/790 memory to 640/1400/900
    [IMG]
The 8540p is relatively quiet in normal use, while when gaming its mildly noisy, but nothing to make fuss about. The fan on full blow is something you do not want to hear :D ...sounds like a hair drier. In the above stress test the fan was quite noisy, never reached those levels in a game for example, but one step from being maxed out (maximum for my fan is 5200 rpm).
I have a few questions about the fingerprint reader. Does it normally take a long time (about 30 seconds) for the user login options to appear after the windows logo has disappeared, after the fingerprint reader software has been enabled?
I mean my previous laptop, a HP pavilion dv5 had a fingerprint reader and it immediately showed the login options after the windows logo disappeared and I was able to right away swipe my fingerprint (it actually took less time than typing a 5 letter password and was a feature I absolutely loved and wanted in a future laptop). With the elitebook the fingerprint login is quite annoying because it delays the boot process by about 30 seconds. The hdd was the same, defragmented in both cases and win 7 x64 on both and apparently the latest version of HP Protect Tools on the elitebook
Is there any solution to this, or is it just a setting i made, or is it how it normaly works :(?

can you check the batter if it moves a little in its plaement ?
Also on the startup go on information and check you waranty , mine (1 weeks old laptop) says feb 2010 ! so is it a refurbished ?

Also for those who know how , how to check if the chipset driver is good ? i know some 8740w have issues with that and how to kow if my drivers (chipset intel ) are up to date ...
Thks ...by the way coming from a 1900*1200 , the hd+ is not crazy for me ....don't really like this ratio ...but no full hd in stock so ...

Yes my battery has a lot of movement. I am planning on fixing that because it annoys me...it makes to much noise.
My warranty is ok. I checked the HP Support Assistant and according to that I have a bit over 3 years of standard warranty starting from the date I made he order to HP.
The chipset driver I think is alright. I did a fresh install of windows and installed the drivers on the HP cd and the latest driver from Intel and Nvidia.
I like the screen not from the resolution point of view but because it has very good contrast, brightness and colors (even better than some consumer desktop monitors I have seen...so for a laptop is quite a revelation) and it is not at all tiering.
I forgot to say that the cooling system seems to be a bit on the small side(radiator a bit small), but it is very efficient and does it's job very well. I would like the cooling system from a quad core model though :D.
Also the left upper corner of the keyboard isn't fixed very well and it makes a clacking sound when i type but that is easily fixable with some double sided sticky tape.
The speakers, compared to the ones on the pavilion dv5, are a mess, they have relatively alright volume but produce distortions and resonate with the case when on max volume(can be fixed with the equalizer from the idt control panel). They are ok for a business laptop but would have wanted more.

    Zalman ..silent and efficient

    BIG Question :

I tested last week an HP 8540W did some tests and then asked the resseller to change it because the battery ect ....he's a very pleasant seller i know so no pb ...

Then i got it right now and after testing (wprime and otha stress test) , i found result less good than the otha system ...did a clean isatl , bios update and all ...same bull ...

So i insatlled the turboboost gadget and to my surprise my I5 560 stick at 2.8 while the otha same laptop used to go to 2.93 !!! (during the tests 4 threads tests of course)

Yeah men same config , same system , same drivers bios , bootware ect ...
tried with all wprime versions ....my 2.04 results stick with an i5 540m !

So ? i mean really , i 'm about to throw it by the windows ..not for 2 seconds diffrences but for all the inconsistancy i see in integration (after my expresscard issue ..dead pixel ....battery ..."escape touch chilling like it's on drug ...)

Well i'm a long time HP workstation user ...but here i'm like !!
I don' even want to call the support .....so beffore thowing it to the face of the seller is anybody have a godammn idea (of course resibntalled all intel dirvers including the turbo boost ones ...) Bios went from D to E....

There's no guarantee Turbo Boost will always set the highest multiplier (in the i5-560M's case, it is 2.93GHz on two cores). While running wPrime 1.55 4 threads on my 560M, for example, I watched it fluctuate between 2.8 and 2.93. The processor regulates how high the Turbo Boost goes based on power consumption, heat, etc. I don't think there is anything wrong with your notebook.

basically this wasn't the case on the otha laptop also it doesn't fluctuate at all and sometime got a weird 2.81 or 2.82 ....on the otha laptop i was on 2.93 always and o a dell preicison with a i7 640 m was on the 3.06 (or some always ...)

Basically when your cpu reaches 100 % on 4 thread the turbo boost should go up to the max ....no?

Not necessarily. As I said, the max Turbo Boost speed is not guaranteed; it depends on factors. Temperature is one, I'm sure there are others. 2.93GHz is the absolute max the i5-560M can go on two cores.
While wPrime 1.55 was running 4 threads on my 560M, I saw the same things you did -- anywhere from 2.80/81/83 to 2.93.

The BIOS in Dell notebooks is not the same as in HP -- they could be more aggressive/forgiving when it comes to temperature or whatever allows the Turbo Boost feature to work.

One way or another, your system sounds normal to me.

    Hello All,

Wondering if anyone out there can help me.I bought a Display Port to HDMI adapter to try and connect my 8540W to my Sony Bravia TV, via a Pioneer Elite Receiver. When I first hooked it up, I was getting stereo sound through my living room speakers, and the image of my laptop screen briefly appeared on my TV. When I unplugged and replugged in the cable it caused the laptop screen image to again briefly appear on my TV. Then I turned to HP support.

HP support told me to install a new driver for the NVida Quadro FX 1800M graphics card. They directed me to the one to install from their website, compatible with Windows 7.

However, now I have no sound and no image at all appearing on my TV. In the NVidia control panel I can see that it recongnizes I have something plugged into the Display Port.

    Any advice much appreciated.

    Thanks

Although it could be a number of reasons, try this fast suggestion. Using the funtion key/f4 key combination, cycle through the display options. This may turn on the signal to the TV. Remember, if you are sending a BlueRay signal to the TV, the laptop screen must be turned off using this key combination in order to avoid DRM issues.

Ok then, a short checklist (things you've probaly already checked):

    The adaptor must be active.
    It must support DisplayPort 1.1a.
    It must support HDMI 1.3.
It should be (not sure if it must be) compliant with the newer DisplayPort ++ spec on our machine.

If all this already applies, then attempt to connect directly to the HDMI port on the TV instead of through the (non-Sony) receiver. (I've had a number of conversations with SONY engineers on the implementation of certain "standards" when it comes to mixing brands.)

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks again

This is the adapter I bought:

DisplayPort to HDMI Video Adapter Converter - M/F

I know its active because I can see in the NVidia control panel its being detected (green light is on)

I can't see anywhere on the spec sheets for this thing whether it supports DisplayPort 1.1a or HDMI 1.3, however, this product was recommended by someone else in the forums a few months back when I first looked into this (can't find the thread any more).

Also, I have no problems running my Flipcam through the HDMI via my receiver into the Sony TV, so doubt its that (and my TV is mounted so I can't access the HDMI sockets on the back anyway :-()

Are there any settings I need to change anywhere on the laptop itself or should this all just be plug and play when its working correctly?

    Cheers

The link you supplied includes this notation:

"DP2HDMIADAP is a passive adapter cable that requires a DP++ port (DisplayPort++), meaning that DVI and HDMI signals can also be passed through the port."

Active adaptors have an onboard chip to convert the clock signals from DP to HDMI. Passive chips just act as a passthrough of the original clock. Since I am not familiar with the NVidia control panel (I have all ATI machines), I do not know if it is reporting back the conversion or just the passthrough. What is strange is that you originally had some positive results with the sound and, at least for a second or two, the picture. Maybe it is an active adaptor and the products website, notated above, is wrong.

Either way, without access to the NVidia set-up, I am, at least for the moment, without further suggestions. Will let you know if I think of anything else.

Thanks. This is helpful. I misunderstood what you meant about 'active'. I thought you just meant that my computer was seeing it, not the specific type of adapter. I will try and find an 'Active' adapter as an alternative and see if that helps

Go into the Control Panel, select Hardware and Sound and under Sound choose Manage Audio Devices. You should be on the Playback tab, select if not.

I have an ATI HDMI Output option here, I assume there's an Nvidia equivalent for you. Play around with the settings, try disabling the main speakers if all else fails. Seems like I had to do that to get my headphones working properly (I had an issue where audio was still going to the main speakers when the headphones were plugged in).
